Bring Her Back is not objectively established as summer 2025’s most frightening horror movie. But its grief-centered story, grisly imagery and unexpected scares make a strong case for that description as a personal reaction—especially for viewers who find emotional horror more unsettling than a steady stream of jump scares.
What is Bring Her Back about?
Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou and written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman, the 2025 A24 film follows a brother and sister who arrive at the secluded home of their new foster mother, Laura. A24’s synopsis puts the premise simply: “A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.” Strange events and a sudden death make the story less a conventional haunted-house setup than a horror film shaped by grief and loss. A24’s film page has the official synopsis and home-viewing options.

Is Bring Her Back scary?
It is disturbing, with grisly imagery and unexpected scares, rather than simply relying on a high frequency of jolts. The Associated Press described it as a deeply disturbing portrait of grief and praised its creativity and surprises. That makes the film a better fit for viewers who welcome horror that lingers emotionally as well as visually than for anyone looking for mild, low-intensity scares.
The Motion Picture Association’s R-rating content description, reproduced by the AP, warns of “some grisly images, language, graphic nudity, strong violent content, underage drinking.” The film runs 104 minutes, according to the AP’s 2025 review; the outlet corrected an earlier 99-minute runtime. What makes the film frightening—and where it falls short
Grief sits at the center
The horror grows out of loss and the unsettling events at Laura’s home. That grief-centered approach gives the scares an emotional context, so the film’s impact depends partly on whether that kind of story works for you.
A performance that complicates the threat
The AP singled out Sally Hawkins for making Laura disturbing but faintly empathetic, and praised Billy Barratt in a difficult role. That tension can make the character more unsettling than a plainly defined villain: menace and vulnerability coexist.
Rank #2
- High-definition Blu-ray delivers crisp images and immersive colour details
- Cinematography improves tension and atmospheric horror sequences
- Horror film by Danny Philippou with exciting suspense
- Collector's packaging with exclusive artwork ensures lasting display appeal
- The original language preserves authentic performances and storytelling
Not every emotional thread lands
The AP’s main reservation is that the intended emotional catharsis does not fully arrive. It also found Piper underdeveloped. If you watch horror chiefly for a satisfying character arc or a powerful emotional payoff, that weakness may matter as much as the film’s disturbing set pieces.
Who should watch it?
Whether this is the right choice depends less on an objective ranking than on the kind of horror you want. These are viewing-guide judgments based on the AP’s review, not measured audience preferences.

- Consider it if you like grief-centered horror, unexpected scares and unsettling imagery, and can accept an emotional payoff that may feel incomplete.
- Approach with caution if graphic violence, nudity or disturbing images are a deal-breaker; the R-rating description is a useful warning.
- Look elsewhere if you want a gentle horror film, rapid-fire scares without a grief-driven story, or especially developed character arcs.
Where can you watch Bring Her Back?
Availability depends on country and date. A24 lists at-home options including Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube and Fandango at Home, as well as Blu-ray through the A24 Shop. Check A24’s current film page and the services available in your region rather than assuming every listing is playable where you live.
In the United States, Warner Bros. Discovery announced the film’s HBO Max streaming debut for October 3, 2025, and its HBO linear debut for October 4, 2025. Those dates mark the original launch, not present-day availability. Hulu also has a U.S. title page for the film, but a listing alone does not establish that it is currently included with a subscription. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement records the U.S. dates; Hulu’s title page is the place to check its current listing.
