The pair, both stars of the 1985 film The Color Purple, were smiling during the private rehearsal, but the presentation’s subject was described as top-secret at the time.
What happened at the Oscars rehearsal
Entertainment Weekly reported from a portion of the private rehearsal the day before the ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, March 2, 2025. Goldberg and Winfrey rehearsed a presentation together. The report did not disclose what they would present, so its subject cannot be established from that account.
Who else rehearsed at the Dolby Theatre?
The rehearsal report also described several other presenters and performers preparing for the show:
- Sterling K. Brown and Ana de Armas rehearsed for the Best Live-Action Short award.
- Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn rehearsed for animated-film awards.
- Miley Cyrus, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Miles Teller were among those named as present or practicing.
- Emma Stone stumbled over part of her rehearsal speech, then joked, “This is gonna go great!”
Why the Goldberg–Winfrey reunion stood out
The two performers shared the screen in The Color Purple, the 1985 film based on Alice Walker’s novel. Both were nominated for their roles in the film. Goldberg later won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Ghost at the 1991 ceremony, recognizing her performance in the 1990 film.

The rehearsal account captured a brief moment of the pair working together, rather than revealing the planned presentation or offering a full account of the private run-through.
