Penelope Featherington enters the new social season determined to find a husband on her own terms—not simply to win Colin Bridgerton. When Colin offers to help her attract suitors, their lessons turn a longstanding friendship into something harder to name. Part 1 ends with Colin asking Penelope to marry him, just as her secret life as Lady Whistledown and her fractured friendship with Eloise make the stakes more complicated.
What Penelope wants from the marriage market
Season 3 begins in the aftermath of two painful discoveries. Penelope has heard Colin say he would never court her, and Eloise has learned that Penelope is Lady Whistledown. Rather than keep waiting for Colin to notice her, Penelope decides to pursue marriage independently. Her goal is not merely a match: she wants a husband who will allow her the freedom to continue her secret writing.
That distinction matters. Penelope’s plan is an attempt to build a future on her own terms, not just a new route to the crush she has carried for years. She also changes how she presents herself in the Ton. Netflix’s Tudum describes her move away from the bright citrus colors associated with the Featherington family; at Lady Danbury’s ball, Penelope appears in dark green. Executive producer Betsy Beers describes the larger change as watching Penelope find “the confidence and the strength to leave the cocoon and become a butterfly.” Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 feature connects the outward transformation to Penelope’s effort to claim a new position in society.
Why Colin’s lessons change their friendship
Colin returns from his travels with a new confidence, but Penelope’s coolness toward him unsettles him. He offers to help her become more confident and find a husband. The arrangement gives Penelope practical support, while placing Colin in close contact with the person he has long treated as a friend.

The romance grows from that familiarity rather than from a conventional first meeting or a straightforward courtship. Executive producer Tom Verica says, “We feel this yearning for them to get together,” and describes their story as “built on friendship, on family interactions, and knowledge.” The confidence lessons make that history newly charged: Colin is helping Penelope pursue someone else while beginning to question whether his own feelings are only friendly.
It is this overlap—Penelope trying to move on, Colin trying to help, and both discovering that their relationship has changed—that gives the season its “long game.” Their history is not a simple obstacle to romance; it is the foundation that makes the shift consequential.

How Part 1 builds to Colin’s proposal
The first half of the season consists of four episodes, released together on May 16, 2024. Netflix’s episode titles are:
- Episode 1: “Out of the Shadows”
- Episode 2: “How Bright the Moon”
- Episode 3: “Forces of Nature”
- Episode 4: “Old Friends”
Episode 3’s hot-air-balloon crisis is one turning point: Colin averts danger when the balloon slips loose. Showrunner Jess Brownell has said the attention to Colin’s exposed forearms in the scene was intentional, calling it “our titillation.” The sequence signals the show’s heightened romantic framing, but the larger shift comes in the final episode.

- Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing - Series 1/2/3/4/5 Boxset
Brownell describes Episode 4 as the season’s “big world-shifting midpoint,” reflecting the structure of an eight-episode season. Part 1 closes with Colin asking Penelope: “For God’s sake, Penelope Featherington. Are you going to marry me or not?” The proposal is a cliffhanger, not a resolution: it changes the terms of their relationship, while leaving the conflicts around Penelope’s independence, Eloise, and Lady Whistledown in play. Netflix Tudum’s Part 1 recap recounts the closing moment.
What the show changes from Romancing Mister Bridgerton
Season 3 draws on Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton, but it is not a faithful episode-by-episode retelling. The novel is the fourth book in Quinn’s series; Benedict’s story comes before Colin’s in the books, while the television series brings Colin and Penelope’s romance forward to Season 3.
Rank #4
| Comparison | The novel | The television series |
|---|---|---|
| Story order | Romancing Mister Bridgerton is the fourth novel; Benedict’s story precedes Colin’s. | Colin and Penelope’s romance is centered in Season 3, before the show adapts Benedict’s story. |
| Romantic setup | The book has its own plot and character details. | Season 3 builds its setup around Penelope seeking a husband and Colin giving her confidence lessons. |
| Lady Whistledown reveal | The reveal is delayed until Romancing Mister Bridgerton. | Viewers learn Penelope is Lady Whistledown at the end of Season 1. |
TIME’s comparison of Season 3 and the novel discusses the altered story order and other adaptation differences. The book can offer a different version of Colin and Penelope’s story, but the television season reshapes when viewers learn key information and how the romance begins.
