Carl Sagan warned that people who cannot question claims or challenge authority can become vulnerable to a political or religious charlatan. He did not mention Donald Trump in the quoted passage. The comparison with Trump is a later interpretation of Sagan’s broader warning, not a prediction Sagan made by name.
Was this Carl Sagan’s final interview?
Not on the evidence of the Charlie Rose archive alone. Its December 20, 1996 program, Remembering Carl Sagan, includes a clip described as Rose’s “most recent interview” with Sagan. That supports calling it Rose’s most recent interview with him; it does not establish that it was Sagan’s final interview with anyone. Charlie Rose archive: “Remembering Carl Sagan”

What did Sagan warn about?
In the interview passage reproduced by Futurism, Sagan argues that scientific literacy and skepticism matter to democratic life. His warning is conditional: when people cannot examine claims or question those in authority, they may be susceptible to a political or religious charlatan.
“If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we’re up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along.”

- A prescient warning of a future we now inhabit, where fake news stories and Internet conspiracy theories play to a disaffected American populace
Sagan also describes the danger of a society built on science and technology while much of the public does not understand either. His concern is not that ordinary people are incapable of learning science; it is that decisions with broad consequences can escape public scrutiny when people lack the tools or confidence to ask questions.
Did Sagan predict Donald Trump?
No. The quoted interview passage does not name Trump, forecast his rise, or describe a specific future candidate. Sagan speaks generally about the kind of political or religious figure who could exploit a public unable to scrutinize claims. Futurism’s 2024 headline applies that warning to Trump; that is the article’s interpretation, not Sagan’s stated prediction. Futurism’s reproduction of the interview passage

The distinction matters: a broad warning can be relevant to later politics without being a prophecy about one person. The passage supports saying Sagan cautioned about susceptibility to political charlatans. It does not support saying he foresaw Trump.
Why did Sagan compare science with financial pages?
Sagan pushed back against the idea that science is too difficult for ordinary readers. In the same passage, he compares understanding science with following stock-market quotations and financial pages, which also involve complexity. His point is that people can learn enough to engage with technical subjects—and that doing so matters when science and technology shape public decisions.

For Sagan, skepticism was not cynicism or automatic rejection. It meant asking how someone knows a claim is true, examining the evidence, and applying that scrutiny even when the speaker holds authority. Those habits are the practical counterpart to scientific literacy in his warning.

The Charlie Rose archive also identifies Sagan’s book The Demon-Haunted World: Science As a Candle in the Dark and lists a May 27, 1996 appearance about it. The book is relevant further reading for his arguments about skepticism and science literacy. Charlie Rose archive and Sagan book reference
