Australian influencer Carmen Azzopardi challenged British comedian Paul Foot during a live show in Europe over a routine about diabetes, according to reports published May 30, 2025. Azzopardi, who has type 1 diabetes, called the material insensitive and misleading. The accounts of what the routine contained come from Azzopardi’s description and footage she recorded; the reporting does not establish a complete, independently verified transcript of Foot’s set.
What happened during the show?
PerthNow reported that Azzopardi attended one of Foot’s performances in Europe and objected during the latter half of his act. According to her account as reported by the outlet, the diabetes material lasted about ten minutes. Azzopardi said it mocked people who use medical technology, including continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), imitated a hypoglycaemic episode and suggested that a person died after a heart attack. Pedestrian.tv, in a report reproduced by inkl, added that Azzopardi said the routine portrayed people with diabetes as having a “victim mentality,” mocked CGM use and treated type 1 and type 2 diabetes as the same. Pedestrian.tv quoted her saying, “I have type one diabetes, I don’t think it’s up to you to decide if it’s insensitive or not.” The same report said Foot defended the routine by arguing that “comedy is subjective,” adding: “The point is that everyone would have a different Venn diagram.” PerthNow also reported that Foot criticized Azzopardi’s grasp of his point and blamed her for the performance ending awkwardly. Pedestrian.tv reported him describing diabetes as “more of a nuisance than an illness.” These remarks are reported accounts of the on-stage exchange; the reviewed coverage does not include a separate formal statement from Foot about the incident.
How did Azzopardi describe the incident afterward?
In a later TikTok quoted by PerthNow, Azzopardi called the experience “deeply embarrassing for him” and “deeply deeply sickening to witness” as someone living with diabetes and as a person with empathy. She said she found nothing humorous, clever, intellectual or creative in making fun of someone’s disability. PerthNow also quoted her calling the routine “one of the most blatant acts of ableism” she had personally experienced since her diagnosis. Those are Azzopardi’s evaluations of the material, not independently established descriptions of the complete performance.
