The film has a capable lead in Ariana DeBose and makes good use of its confined setting, but its escalating paranoia and twists do not fully earn the premise. “Quiet disaster” is a fair verdict on the execution—not a consensus about every part of the film.
What is I.S.S. about?
Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and written by Nick Shafir, this 2023 science-fiction thriller unfolds aboard the International Space Station in the near future. A worldwide conflict begins, and the American and Russian astronauts receive orders to seize control of the station by any means necessary. The geopolitical crisis is brought into a small, pressurized workplace, where the crews’ professional cooperation collides with national loyalties.
Ariana DeBose plays Kira Foster. The cast also includes Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr., Masha Mashkova, Pilou Asbæk and Costa Ronin. Apple TV lists the film at 1 hour 35 minutes and rates it R in the United States for some violence and language.
Does the premise become a convincing thriller?
The central idea supplies immediate tension: the astronauts cannot simply walk away from one another, and events on Earth turn routine trust into a possible liability. The station’s limited spaces help the story feel contained rather than sprawling. But a high-concept setup needs more than a dangerous order; it needs a persuasive chain of decisions and consequences. That is where the film’s promise and its execution diverge.

The Associated Press review found the premise intriguing but argued that the film fails to turn it into a coherent thriller, citing clumsy twists and the station as essentially its only setting. The Guardian likewise saw a gap between the setup and the ideas developed from it, describing the film as too limited to become actively cerebral. Together, those criticisms point to the same frustration: the situation invites a sharper exploration of loyalty, fear and cooperation than the plot consistently delivers.
What works: DeBose and the confined setting
DeBose’s performance is a recurring strength in the critical response. The Guardian praised her work, and its second review also called her impressive. Her presence gives the story a human center as Kira faces pressure from both the international crisis and the crew around her.

The station is another asset. Its enclosed corridors and work areas make the conflict feel physically close, and the basic premise makes ordinary interactions carry an extra charge. The Guardian called the film a “lowish-budget, slightly muted survival thriller,” a description that captures both its restrained scale and the atmosphere the setting can provide.
Why the plot loses force
The main weakness is not that the film chooses a quiet or contained approach; it is that the turns toward suspicion and violence can feel contrived. The Guardian’s April 28, 2024 review objected in particular to the rapid shift from rational, highly trained scientists to paranoid killers. When characters’ choices seem driven more by the need to generate the next twist than by established motives, the station’s pressure stops feeling like a credible cause and starts feeling like a plot device.

The result is a thriller that can create tension in principle without sustaining it in practice. The setup raises questions about what the astronauts know, whom they can trust and how far they will go. But limited development of those possibilities, alongside uneven plotting, leaves the film less gripping and thoughtful than its premise suggests.
Is I.S.S. worth watching?
It may suit viewers looking for a short, contained space thriller or for another strong DeBose performance. Those expecting a tightly reasoned survival story, a deep examination of the political premise or a series of fully convincing character choices are more likely to find it disappointing. The film’s strengths are real, but they do not quite compensate for how often its plot strains credibility.

Its critic consensus praises the cast and claustrophobic setting while finding the thrills familiar. Its audience summary notes slow pacing and dissatisfaction with the ending. These aggregates offer context, not a substitute for weighing what works and what does not.
