The press has called him a “rockstar” poet, but that is a description of his stage impact—not a formal genre or a label shared by every poet. His rise also reflects a debate over what a mushaira should make room for: established conventions of poetic performance, or more direct public commentary.
Who is Imran Pratapgarhi?
Imran Pratapgarhi is the public name of Mohammed Imran Khan. Scroll reported that he was born in Pratapgarh on 6 August 1987 and earned a master’s degree in Hindi literature at Allahabad University. He wrote in Hindi and took part in kavi sammelans while at university before beginning to participate in mushairas in 2008. (Scroll, 25 April 2018)
He later entered electoral politics. PRS Legislative Research lists him as an elected Rajya Sabha member from Maharashtra, with a term beginning on 5 July 2022. Its displayed parliamentary data run through 13 August 2026. (PRS Legislative Research)
What is a mushaira, and why is he called a “rockstar” poet?
A mushaira is a gathering where poets recite their work before an audience. The setting makes the act of performance central: a poem is heard in the room, and the response of listeners becomes part of the event. Pratapgarhi’s emphatic, declamatory delivery and his ability to turn contemporary concerns into memorable lines have made him especially prominent in that live setting.

Scroll’s 2018 profile reported that more than 30,000 people attended a Jamia Millia Islamia mushaira and that Pratapgarhi received the biggest cheer of the night. That is a press-reported count for one historical event, not an audited measure of his general audience. The same profile quoted him describing crowds of 20,000 to 25,000 at mushairas he had seen; that, too, is his account rather than a verified series of counts. (Scroll, 25 April 2018)
“Rockstar” captures the excitement and scale associated with such appearances, but it can obscure the mixed reception. Scroll reported that some senior Urdu poets objected to what they regarded as his unrestrained manner. It included poet Munawwar Rana’s criticism of his stage conduct and placed that disagreement within a tradition that values respect among poets. His popularity is therefore not evidence that every poet accepts his style, or that applause alone defines a successful mushaira.

Which poems brought his work to wider attention?
“Madrasa” and the early breakthrough
His nazm “Madrasa,” about resisting the association of madrasas with terrorism, gained attention after a recitation at a Mumbai mushaira in 2010 was widely shared. Scroll describes it as an early breakthrough in a career that had begun on the mushaira circuit two years earlier. (Scroll, 25 April 2018)
Poetry about current events
Scroll identifies “Filisteen,” concerning Palestinians; “Najeeb,” about missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed; and “Umar,” about victims of mob lynching. The profile reported that Pratapgarhi had written more than 100 nazms. It also described social and political subjects as a conscious part of his work after he saw large audiences gathering to hear poetry. (Scroll, 25 April 2018)

He has described his style as accessible rather than linguistically difficult. In a March 2025 interview with The Indian Express, he said: “My poetry is very simple. You can’t say it is difficult Hindi or Urdu, and hence, it is accessible to all.” (The Indian Express, 7 March 2025)
How does his work connect poetry with activism?
For Pratapgarhi, the performance space has also been a way to draw attention to violence and its consequences. Scroll reported that he said he would donate an event fee to Umar Mohammed’s family and had given appearance earnings to other families affected by lynching. The report also described a blood-donation initiative: Pratapgarhi said it collected 2,816 units across India. The Indian Express later repeated that figure while reporting on a 2017 camp at Jantar Mantar; it should be understood as a figure attributed to those accounts, not an independently audited total. His political subject matter does not mean every poem is written to a fixed brief. In the 2018 Scroll interview, he said: “I do not consciously sit to write about a particular topic,” describing poems that began with flashes of inspiration. (Scroll, 25 April 2018)

The phrase is best understood as an interpretation of his approach, not proof that he single-handedly changed mushaira tradition. His performances bring a forceful public persona and contemporary social or political nazms into a setting where audiences may also expect established forms, etiquette, and mutual regard among shayars. That creates a visible tension: poetry can entertain through live delivery while also functioning as commentary and activism.

Pratapgarhi’s own account of his career points to the role of performance and circulation. In a March 2025 interview, he said: “Social media, Mushairas and Kavi Sammelans made me what I am today.” (The Indian Express, 7 March 2025) The resulting visibility has put socially engaged poetry before large crowds, while the criticism recorded by Scroll shows that the style remains contested rather than universally embraced.
His later career in politics
The Indian Express reported in March 2025 that Pratapgarhi was a Rajya Sabha MP and chairperson of the All India Congress Committee’s minority department. Its account traced his unsuccessful 2019 election contest in Moradabad, appointment to that party department in June 2021, and election to the Rajya Sabha in July 2022.
