In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones is an Indian English-language film about architecture students in 1970s Delhi. Written by Arundhati Roy and directed by Pradip Krishen, it won the 1988 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in a language outside Schedule VIII of the Constitution. Its award recognition and 2026 restoration make it a notable work in Indian cinema, though the available evidence does not establish that it ranks among only a handful of commercially successful Indian films in English.
What is In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones about?
The film follows Annie, an architecture student who repeatedly struggles to finish his studies, and the students and academic world around him. Set in 1970s New Delhi, it mixes a campus story with a view of the pressures, frustrations and ambitions of professional education.
Film at Lincoln Center describes the film as originally made for television. Its offbeat, playful approach is part of what distinguishes it from a conventional institutional drama: the focus is on student life and its absurdities as well as its anxieties.
Was the story based on Arundhati Roy’s life?
The characters are fictional. The Directorate of Film Festivals’ 36th National Film Awards catalogue says the film’s milieu and settings draw on Roy’s experience at Delhi’s architecture school. Roy wrote the screenplay and also appears in the cast, but that connection does not make the plot a literal account of her life.

Why is the film important in Indian cinema?
Its significance is clearest in the combination of language, subject and official recognition. It is an Indian film made in English, centred on students in a professional college, and the national award catalogue singled out its portrayal of student aspirations and distress. The film has also been preserved and brought back to festival audiences through a 4K restoration.
Calling it “one of the few successful examples” requires defining success. The award establishes critical and institutional recognition, not box-office performance, and the available sources do not provide a comparative count or commercial measure for Indian English-language films. A more supportable description is that it is a distinctive, award-winning example of Indian cinema in English.

Did it win a National Film Award?
Yes. The Directorate of Film Festivals’ 36th National Film Awards catalogue records the film as the 1988 winner of Best Feature Film in languages other than those specified in Schedule VIII of the Constitution, with producer Pradip Krishen named for the award. The catalogue’s citation praises its portrayal of “the agonies and aspiration of the present-day student community in excellent cinematic language.” The award year is 1988; festival listings identify the film as a 1989 title, a separate year designation.
What happened to the film’s restoration?
Film Heritage Foundation carried out a 4K restoration at L’Immagine Ritrovata in association with director Pradip Krishen. The restoration drew on the 16mm original camera negative and sound negative preserved at NFDC-National Film Archive of India, as well as a 35mm release print preserved at Film Heritage Foundation. The BFI screening listing describes damage to the negative—including fading, tears, scratches, mould and emulsion damage—and the repair, digital restoration and colour grading involved.

The restored film screened at events in 2026, including the New York Film Festival and a UK screening listed by the BFI. Those are specific festival appearances; they do not establish a continuing theatrical run or general streaming availability.
Where can you watch the restored film?
Availability depends on territory and date, so check local cinema listings and the streaming services available to you. A Google Play listing reports the film as unavailable there, which is evidence about that platform listing rather than a global availability check. Film at Lincoln Center’s New York Film Festival page and the BFI listing can help identify the specific restoration and screenings, but neither guarantees a current screening near you.
