In Annalee Newitz’s 2011 Gizmodo retrospective, women called “fraws” rule over men called “plugots,” and “seeders” are men used for breeding.
What does “seeders” mean?
In America 3000, “seeder” is a role assigned to a man used for breeding. It is part of the film’s invented vocabulary for a radically unequal society. Newitz’s Gizmodo article, published January 19, 2011, describes the setting as a tribal society in what remains of America, roughly 900 years in the future. That date is a fictional plot detail, not a real-world prediction.
How does the film’s society work?
Newitz describes women, called “fraws,” as rulers who live in comparatively better towns, while men, called “plugots,” are subordinated. Men are assigned different functions: “machos” do labor, “seeders” are used for breeding, and “toys” are male eunuchs kept for amusement. The female leader is a “tiara.” These labels belong to the film’s fictional setting.
What happens in America 3000?
In Newitz’s account, a man learns to read and decides men should be equal to women. A rival female leader complicates the struggle. The male protagonist later enters an underground NORAD facility and finds clothing, a boombox, and hand grenades. Newitz summarizes the premise as, “In the far future, women enslave men – until there’s a love revolution!” The conflict, she says, ultimately ends “through love.”

What is the film’s invented slang?
Newitz offers a partial glossary; it is not a complete guide to the film’s language. Alongside the gendered roles, the terms she records include:
- contams: radioactive zones where nuclear weapons once hit
- comb: town
- frow or frol: woman
- plugot: man
- neggi: never or negative
- woggos: crazy
- plastic: super awesome
- hot: intense
- cold: bad or dead
- prezzie: a legendary President
- murka: old America
- commies: the Soviet Union of the past
- scan: watch, show, or understand
Why does the headline sound like a prediction?
It is a playful description of the movie’s premise, not evidence about the future. Newitz introduces the film with comic enthusiasm, writing, “I don’t think it’s possible to overstate how awesome the movie America 3000 is.” That is her personal assessment, not an objective consensus or a claim by the director. The film’s social order and vocabulary should be read as science-fiction world-building.
