There are two reported answers for Tom Cruise’s HALO jump in Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018): Cruise said he did 106 takes, while stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood told Reuters the crew completed 102 “different takes.” Both accounts describe a demanding sequence, but the sources do not explain the four-take difference.
Which ‘Mission: Impossible’ stunt was it?
The figures refer to the HALO freefall sequence in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, not a stunt from another film in the series. Ethan Hunt and CIA agent August Walker, played by Henry Cavill, leap from 25,000 feet above Paris at sunset. In the scene, lightning strikes Walker, and Hunt has to catch and revive him before they reach the ground, according to Skydance’s 2018 account.
HALO stands for “high altitude, low opening”: the jump begins at high altitude, with the parachute opened lower down. Reuters reported in 2018 that Cruise was the first actor on camera to perform a HALO skydive from 25,000 feet. That is Reuters’ description at the time, not a current, independently verified record.
Why are two different take counts reported?

The two figures should be kept separate and attributed to their speakers. The published accounts do not reconcile the difference, and neither establishes an audited production tally. Nor should “takes” be treated as interchangeable with jumps: Eastwood gave 150 as the number of Abu Dhabi jumps and 102 as the number of different takes.

What made the sequence so demanding?
Repeated jumps and wind-tunnel preparation
Eastwood told Reuters that preparation included 500 hours of wind-tunnel work, a purpose-built helmet designed without a visible oxygen attachment, and 150 jumps in Abu Dhabi. Those are details from the stunt coordinator’s 2018 account, not independently verified totals.
A performance that had to look like real skydiving
Cruise described the physical effort of each attempt at CinemaCon: “Each take is like running an 800 meter sprint.” Director Christopher McQuarrie said the goal was to make viewers believe Cruise was actually skydiving. Skydance quoted McQuarrie describing the production’s practical question as, “How much is physically possible without killing Tom?”

Action designed around the story
Skydance says the sequence was filmed in the United Arab Emirates and rehearsed at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom, where the crew built a large wind tunnel. Reuters reported that Eastwood, Cruise and McQuarrie worked together on stunt ideas, developing the action around the characters and story as well as the spectacle.
