Body Count released its rap-metal cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” on 20 September 2024, with David Gilmour—the guitarist associated with the original—playing on the track. Ice-T rewrote the lyrics, turning the collaboration into both a new arrangement and a lyrical adaptation. The song was the lead single from Body Count’s album Merciless, announced for release through Century Media on 22 November 2024.
How the collaboration came about
Ice-T first contacted Gilmour to ask permission to use “Comfortably Numb.” Gilmour then offered to play on the recording. He explained that Ice-T’s new words caught his attention, particularly their connection to the present-day world. Guitar World’s 20 September 2024 report and MusicRadar’s release-day coverage describe Gilmour’s involvement and response.
Gilmour called the version “quite radical” and said the words struck him. He also said, “I like the new lyrics, they’re talking about the world we’re living in now, which is quite scary.” The comments point to what interested him beyond the chance to revisit a familiar guitar part: Ice-T had given the song a different verbal perspective.
What Body Count changed
Ice-T’s new lyrics
This is Body Count’s cover, not a new Pink Floyd recording. Ice-T wrote new lyrics rather than simply performing the original words over a heavier backing. He described the song as introspective, saying it acknowledged that he was older. His comments connect the adaptation to questions about continuing on and the temptation to avoid reality.

A rap-metal arrangement with Gilmour on guitar
Body Count recast the song in its heavy rap-metal style, while Gilmour contributed guitar and was given room to reinterpret the guitar material. Guitar World described the result as an industrial reimagining. The coverage establishes the broad contrast in arrangement and performance roles, but does not provide a formal musical analysis or a note-by-note comparison.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to hear the cover in relation to the original
The most useful comparison is in two parts: Ice-T’s newly written lyrics replace the original lyrical treatment, while Body Count’s rap-metal arrangement changes the musical setting and makes room for Gilmour’s guitar contribution. MusicRadar reported that Gilmour found the version radical and the new words relevant; Louder also reported on his guest appearance. The available reporting supports that contrast, not a claim that the cover reproduces the original’s structure or sound in detail.
