What happened on New Year’s Eve
The altercation took place near Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue in Los Angeles on December 31, 2023. LAPD-related reporting placed the incident at about 3 p.m. local time. Early coverage described a confrontation between Ziering and minibike riders.
In a public statement reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, Ziering said his car was approached while he was stuck in traffic and that he got out to assess possible damage. He described the encounter as escalating into a physical altercation and said he acted to protect himself. That is Ziering’s account, not an independent finding about how the incident began.

Ziering wrote: “While stuck in traffic, my car was approached aggressively by one of these riders leading to an unsettling confrontation. In an attempt to assess any damage I exited my car. This action, unfortunately, escalated into a physical altercation, which I navigated to protect myself,” according to the Los Angeles Times. He also said, “I am relieved to report that my daughter and I are both completely unscathed.”

Police information reported by the Los Angeles Times
The Los Angeles Times reported that LAPD confirmed a battery report and identified Ziering as a victim on the report. A later account cited police information describing the incident as arising over possible damage to his vehicle. This identifies what was reported to police; it does not settle every disputed detail of the confrontation.
What the available video showed in media accounts
Video circulated publicly, but the clips should not be treated as a complete official determination of cause or fault. The Los Angeles Times described footage in which Ziering approached a rider before other riders joined the confrontation. A short clip’s sequence is relevant context, but it is not the same as a full evidentiary record or a court finding.

Injuries and the response
Ziering said that he and his daughter were unscathed. The Los Angeles Times later quoted an LAPD account saying the victim and child had no serious injuries. Contemporary reports differed on the child’s age, so it is not stated here.
CBS reported in early January 2024 that LAPD detectives were investigating. That was the status reported at the time, not confirmation of the investigation’s current status. CBS News covered the initial police response.

Two arrests reported in May 2024
In May 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that LAPD arrested two suspects in connection with the incident. The report establishes that arrests were reported; it does not establish the outcome of a criminal prosecution.
Civil suit reported dismissed in June 2026
In June 2026, MyNewsLA reported that Jacob Hernandez’s civil suit against Ziering was dismissed with prejudice. The report said the parties mutually dismissed their claims without damages. That is the reported outcome of the civil case; the reviewed reporting does not establish the disposition of any criminal prosecution. MyNewsLA reported the civil-case outcome.
