Why The Perfect Couple’s Opening Credits Put the Cast in a Wedding Dance

The cast’s dance to Meghan Trainor’s “Criminals” began as a dream-sequence idea and became a playful tone-setter for The Perfect Couple’s murder mystery.

The opening credits of The Perfect Couple show the wedding party dancing together to Meghan Trainor’s “Criminals.” It is not a scene the characters later discuss; it is a deliberate tone-setter for a murder mystery that wants to feel suspenseful and fun at once. Choreographer Charm La’Donna created the routine, which began as an idea for an unsettling dream sequence before becoming the show’s credits.

What happens in the opening credits?

The cast performs a choreographed group dance at the rehearsal dinner for Amelia and Benji’s wedding weekend. The sequence plays as a musical opening, not as a plot event that the characters later explain. In the story’s lightly imagined backstory, director Susanne Bier pictured the guests practicing together in the days before the dinner. Netflix Tudum and TV Insider describe the wedding-party setting.

What song is in The Perfect Couple opening credits?

The song is Meghan Trainor’s “Criminals,” and the dance was choreographed by Charm La’Donna. Netflix Tudum notes that the repeated lyric “Call us criminals, criminals” plays into the series’ central question of who may be guilty. Glamour reported that “Criminals” was released on August 16, 2024, on the deluxe edition of Trainor’s sixth studio album, Timeless; that is the song’s reported release context, not a claim about a soundtrack edition for the show.

Why does the dance feel so unexpected?

The contrast is the point: a polished, almost celebratory group dance sits beside the dark premise of a murder mystery. Bier described the sequence as a way to establish a “slightly heightened reality” in which viewers can have fun. Showrunner Jenna Lamia likewise wanted viewers to understand that the series was an enjoyable ride, not simply a grim mystery. In Glamour, Bier put the intention this way: “Hey guys, it’s a murder mystery. It has a dark undercurrent, but it is really a lot of fun; you should know that this is not going to be homework,”

How did an episode idea become the opening credits?

The dance was first conceived as part of a disturbing dream involving Amelia and Merritt. Practical production considerations led the team to rethink that version. The idea then moved toward a teaser and ultimately became the credits after the cast learned the routine quickly. TheWrap reported that the cast picked it up in about half a day, while Netflix’s account describes Bier recognizing that the dance could immediately signal the show’s mix of thriller and entertainment.

Bier chose “Criminals” from song suggestions and wanted the movement to avoid feeling like a TikTok trend that could date the series. La’Donna designed a party-like routine intended for the whole cast to enjoy, rather than a dance built around virtuoso performers. She told Glamour: “I wanted to create something that the entire cast could enjoy, like a dance you might join in at a party,”

What was filming the sequence like?

Netflix reports that some cast members were nervous about dancing. Bier encouraged them to have fun instead of aiming for perfection, and she joined the group herself in footage shown after Episode 6’s credits. TV Insider reported Bier’s estimate that she filmed the number in about an hour and a half, compared with her stated expectation of roughly a day and a half to two days for a sequence of that kind. That is Bier’s production anecdote as reported by TV Insider, not an independently verified production log.

Is The Perfect Couple based on a book?

Yes. Netflix identifies the series as based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel The Perfect Couple. The book is the source material for the series, but it is not necessary to understand the credits dance or its purpose.
