Ken Loach’s film brings a declining former mining community in northeast England into contact with Syrian refugees placed in the village, then follows the tentative bond between pub landlord TJ Ballantyne and Yara, a young woman with a camera. The film was listed at IFFK 2023 on 2 December at 6:00 PM.
A pub becomes a contested meeting place
The story gathers around the Old Oak, the last pub in a once-thriving former mining community. It is more than a backdrop: the pub is described as the area’s remaining public gathering place, where local residents meet and where the arrival of Syrian refugees intensifies existing tensions. The same space that might bring people together is also a place where anxieties and grievances surface.
That setting ties the film’s social conflict to the everyday conditions of the characters’ lives. Loach described the northeast England mining area as neglected, marked by deprivation and alienation. The refugees’ arrival does not erase the community’s own hardships, nor do those hardships make the newcomers’ presence a simple problem with an easy solution.
How can two traumatized communities coexist?
That question captures the film’s central difficulty. Loach describes the story as asking how local residents and Syrian refugees can cope with one another and find a way to live together. His account holds two realities in view: a working-class community shaped by decline and a group of newcomers displaced from home. The film’s solidarity is therefore a possibility to work toward, not a settled condition shared by everyone from the start.

Loach connects the possibility of solidarity to the history of mining communities, while also emphasizing the disappointment and hopelessness that remain. As he put it: “Although there’s still the spirit of the solidarity of the miners when they were there, there’s also dissatisfaction and lack of hope.” The inherited ideal of collective support exists alongside present-day insecurity; it does not automatically overcome suspicion or disagreement.
TJ and Yara build a bridge through friendship
TJ Ballantyne, the pub landlord, and Yara, a young Syrian woman who carries a camera, form the film’s central relationship. Their unlikely friendship creates a personal route toward mutual understanding between people whose communities are divided by different experiences. Their connection matters because it begins with two individuals meeting one another, rather than assuming that an entire community can be reconciled by a slogan.

What solidarity means in The Old Oak
The film frames solidarity as an effort made under pressure: people must encounter one another while living with different histories and immediate hardships. The Old Oak pub offers a shared place, and TJ and Yara’s friendship offers a human connection, but neither makes coexistence frictionless. Loach’s emphasis on dissatisfaction and lack of hope keeps the film’s call for understanding grounded in the conditions that make it difficult.
