Huey Lewis said in 2020 that he had lost about 80 percent of the hearing in his right ear years earlier, and that his left-ear hearing fluctuated after a severe Ménière’s episode in 2018. The songs on Weather, Huey Lewis and the News’ 2020 album, were completed before that episode. In a 2026 interview, Lewis described a different stage of his experience: he said a cochlear implant helped him understand speech, but he could no longer hear music or distinguish pitch.
What Huey Lewis said about his hearing loss
In a February 19, 2020 interview with the Recording Academy, Lewis said he had lost about 80 percent of the hearing in his right ear decades earlier. After his more recent crisis, hearing in his left ear could vary. When it was better, he wore hearing aids and could hear speech; he said he might be able to hear music well enough to sing.
He described the contrast in the interview: “When my hearing’s good—I wear hearing aids—I’m okay. I can hear speech and everything, and I might even be able to hear music enough to sing.” When it was worse, he said, “I can’t hear anything, I can barely hear the phone. I can hear you when you’re 24 inches away, that’s about it.” These are Lewis’s descriptions of his own hearing at that time, not a general account of how hearing loss affects everyone.
How the 2018 Ménière’s episode affected him
Lewis’s severe Ménière’s episode occurred in 2018. CBS News reported that his symptoms became debilitating during a January 27 performance in Dallas. Recalling the show, Lewis said: “And I went on stage and it was horrible,” Lewis says. “It was just unbelievable. Couldn’t hear a thing. Sang out of tune. Had the worst night of my life.” The band canceled its touring plans.

The Recording Academy describes Ménière’s disease as an inner-ear disorder that affects hearing and balance. A 2026 Los Angeles Times report, attributing its general symptom description to NIH/NIDCD, lists severe dizziness, ringing in the ears, hearing loss and a sensation of congestion in the ear. Causes remain uncertain, and there is no cure. Lewis also told the Recording Academy that he lost 18 pounds while initially trying treatments; that personal detail is not a treatment recommendation or an expected outcome for others.
What Lewis said about hearing music in 2026
In a July 10, 2026 report, the Los Angeles Times quoted Lewis saying he used a cochlear implant to understand speech, but could not hear music or distinguish pitch. “My cochlear implant, it breaks everything down into digital bits so I can understand,” he said. He also described the loss music represented for him: “My life has changed immeasurably. I can’t hear music. Music is not part of my life anymore, which is a hard pill to swallow.”

This is Lewis’s account of his own experience with the implant, not a claim about what cochlear implants can do for every recipient. It also describes his reported hearing in 2026; it should not be confused with what he told the Recording Academy in 2020 about fluctuating hearing and hearing aids.

Weather was released on February 14, 2020, as Huey Lewis and the News’ tenth studio album. The Recording Academy reported that the songs were finished before Lewis’s intense 2018 Ménière’s episode. The album therefore predates the crisis that made it difficult for him to hear; it was not recorded after he lost the ability to hear music.

In 2020, Lewis told the Recording Academy, “We’re very proud of the record, and we’re trying to make some noise with it.” The band’s official page lists seven tracks, in this order:
