D12 publicly planned to continue recording after Proof’s death. In later years, Eminem described the group as ending when Proof died, while a 2026 interview reported that the remaining members had completed another album. The record is less a simple instant breakup than a gradual decline after the loss of a central friend and collaborator.
Who Proof was to Eminem and D12
Proof, born Deshaun Holton, was 32 when he was killed in Detroit on April 11, 2006. He and Eminem had been close since before Eminem’s mainstream success; Proof was also a central figure in the Detroit rap circle that helped shape D12. The Associated Press reported that Proof was Eminem’s best man. The Washington Post’s Associated Press report places the friendship and group in that early Detroit context.
At Proof’s funeral, Eminem put the loss in terms that joined his personal history to his stage identity: “Without Proof, there would be a Marshall Mathers, but there would not be an Eminem, there would not be a D12 and there would not be a Slim Shady,” The Guardian reported. It was a tribute, not a measured claim about what Eminem’s career would otherwise have been. It does, however, make clear how he understood Proof’s importance to the person and the music.
What D12 had built before his death
D12 had already established a substantial group history. Its debut album, Devil’s Night, arrived in 2001, followed by D12 World in 2004. Proof also released his solo debut, Searching for Jerry Garcia, in 2005. The Los Angeles Times’ 2006 coverage records that chronology. Proof’s death therefore came after the group’s main early run, but before its members had publicly ruled out continuing.

D12 initially said it would continue
The group’s immediate public response complicates the idea that Proof’s death caused an instant breakup. In May 2006, D12 member Denaun Porter, also known as Kon Artis, said the group planned to keep working and use material Proof had recorded. The Los Angeles Times reproduced his statement: “If people think that because he’s not here we’re not going to keep doing what we’re doing, then they’re wrong.” The report captures the band’s intention at the time; a stated plan is not the same as a guarantee of sustained recording or releases.
Why Proof’s death became a turning point
Proof’s role was not limited to appearing on records. He was Eminem’s longtime friend and a key part of the shared Detroit history behind D12. His death removed a personal and creative anchor at a moment when the group was deciding how to carry on. That helps explain why Eminem later described Proof’s death as the end of D12, even though the group initially said it would continue.

In “Stepping Stone,” a song discussed in a 2026 Guitar World interview, Eminem raps: “The moment that Proof died, so did the group. D12 is over.” The line is a retrospective expression of his view, not a formal announcement made at the time of the shooting. The same 2026 interview describes D12’s studio activity slowing and also reports that the remaining members completed D12 Forever. It does not establish a release date or amount to a formal release announcement.

The available account supports calling Proof’s death a major turning point, not the independently proven sole cause of every later change. The initial intention to continue, the subsequent slowdown in studio activity, Eminem’s later declaration in a song, and the report of a completed album describe different stages and kinds of activity. The 2026 interview also identifies Eminem’s hiatus as part of the group’s later context. No quantified measure in these accounts isolates how much Proof’s death affected D12’s commercial performance.

There is a further limit to what can be said about the night itself: early reports of the nightclub shooting differed, and the cited accounts do not settle contested details about who fired first. The initial Associated Press account and The Guardian’s contemporaneous coverage reflect that uncertainty. The significance of Proof’s death to Eminem and D12 does not require presenting disputed event mechanics as settled fact.
