How The New York Times Is Building a Games Platform Around Wordle

Wordle brought tens of millions of users to The New York Times, many of whom played other games. The platform has since grown beyond a single daily puzzle, but public figures do not show Wordle’s standalone subscription or revenue impact.

Wordle’s role in The New York Times’ games strategy was bigger than one viral puzzle: the company said it brought tens of millions of new users, many of whom went on to play other Times games. The Times has positioned Games as part of a broader digital subscription portfolio, and its continued expansion—from solo puzzles to multiplayer Crossplay—shows how it is building beyond a single hit. The public figures demonstrate reach and engagement, but do not establish how many subscriptions Wordle itself generated.

Why the Times treats games as part of its subscription strategy

The Times’ 2022 Form 10-K framed its ambition as becoming an essential digital subscription for curious English-speaking readers. It identified puzzle gaming alongside areas such as sports, cooking and expert shopping recommendations, and described the Wordle acquisition as one investment in that broader effort. The 2022 Form 10-K therefore presents Wordle not simply as a standalone viral success, but as a fit with a multi-product strategy.

In its 2022 earnings materials, the company also described interconnected products as a way to serve more reader needs and build a bundle. That supports a strategic link between Games and subscriptions; it does not show that Wordle alone produced a particular number of paid conversions or a measurable share of revenue.

What Wordle contributed: reach and cross-game play

In its May 2022 first-quarter earnings announcement, The New York Times Company said Wordle brought “an unprecedented tens of millions of new users” to The Times, “many of whom stayed to play other games.” The company repeated the tens-of-millions reach claim in its Q1 2022 earnings release and its 2022 Investor Day presentation. These are company-reported descriptions, not an exact user count or an independently audited measure.

The distinction between acquisition and conversion matters. The reported reach and cross-play support the idea that Wordle introduced a large audience to the wider games catalogue. They do not quantify how many of those users subscribed, whether Wordle changed retention, or how much revenue it generated on its own.

From one daily hit to a broader games catalogue

A simple daily puzzle can give people a low-friction reason to arrive; a larger catalogue can offer different formats and reasons to return. That is a strategic interpretation of the Times’ portfolio approach, not a measured causal result. Historical figures show how activity extended beyond Wordle: The Times said its games were played more than 8 billion times in 2023, including 4.8 billion Wordle plays, and reported 10 million NYT Games app downloads that year, according to Axios in January 2024. Those counts describe 2023, not current activity.

A more recent scale indicator came in January 2026, when the Associated Press reported that Times Games puzzles were played 11.2 billion times during 2025. AP attributed the figure to The New York Times. A play count signals engagement at scale, but by itself does not reveal unique players, paying subscribers or revenue. The AP report also described Crossplay as the company’s first designed multiplayer game.

Crossplay and the move beyond solo puzzles

Crossplay gives the platform a format beyond the familiar pattern of an individual solving a puzzle. The AP’s January 2026 description of it as the Times’ first designed multiplayer game marks a distinct product development: Games is adding a social, shared-play dimension rather than relying only on a catalogue of solo puzzles. The available reporting establishes that positioning, not the game’s effect on subscriptions or how much play it attracts.

Wordle beyond the screen

In 2022, Hasbro and NYT Games announced Wordle: The Party Game, a physical adaptation for group play. It extends the brand into an in-person format, but it is a separate product from the digital NYT Wordle puzzle; buying the party game is not required to play online. The announcement does not establish current retail stock or pricing. Hasbro’s announcement describes the partnership and product.

What the public evidence can—and cannot—show

Taken together, the company’s strategic filings, its audience statement and later play figures support a clear account: the Times sees games as part of a broader subscription portfolio, Wordle introduced a very large audience, and the Games offering has continued to expand into additional formats. The public figures do not establish Wordle’s standalone revenue, subscriber conversion, retention uplift or percentage contribution to Games revenue. Those outcomes should not be inferred from audience or play counts alone.
