The bald Indian actor in Star Trek was Persis Khambatta, who played Lieutenant Ilia in the 1979 feature film Star Trek: The Motion Picture. She was a former Miss India and model-turned-actor—not a member of the original television series’ cast.
Who was Persis Khambatta?
Persis Khambatta was an Indian model and actor and a former Miss India. Her best-known Star Trek role was Lieutenant Ilia, a Deltan navigator in the franchise’s first feature film. The official StarTrek.com retrospective by David McDonnell describes Ilia as a love interest to Will Decker.
Which Star Trek production featured her?
Khambatta appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, released in 1979. This was a theatrical film, not the original Star Trek television series. The distinction matters: although the series and film belong to the same franchise, Khambatta’s documented role was as Ilia in the movie.
Why was she bald in the film?
A 2015 Scroll retrospective reports that Khambatta shaved her head for the role. The film’s striking image of Ilia became closely associated with the actor, but the head-shaving detail is reported by Scroll rather than stated in the StarTrek.com retrospective.

How did her casting fit the franchise’s diversity story?
Scroll places Khambatta’s appearance in the context of Star Trek’s earlier multiracial television crew and the franchise’s representation of ethnic-minority actors. That context should not be mistaken for evidence that Khambatta appeared in the original series, or for a claim that the franchise’s representation was comprehensive. Her documented contribution was a prominent role in the 1979 film.
Khambatta also spoke about representation beyond the screen. In its 1998 obituary, The Independent reported that she campaigned in the United States for ethnic-minority actors to be cast in ethnic roles. See Kuldip Singh’s obituary for that biographical account.
