The Apprentice is a 2024 dramatic film about Donald Trump’s early business career and his relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn. Its central claim is interpretive: that Cohn’s mentorship helped shape Trump’s approach to power. The film builds that origin story from reported research and dramatized scenes, not documentary footage or a transcript of private conversations.
What is The Apprentice about?
Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the film follows Trump’s early business years and his connection to Cohn, the lawyer who becomes his mentor in the story. Sebastian Stan plays Trump, Jeremy Strong plays Cohn, and Maria Bakalova plays Ivana Trump. The film was selected for the 2024 Cannes competition and has a listed runtime of 120 minutes, according to the Festival de Cannes.

Cannes’ official synopsis describes Trump’s ascent as a “Faustian deal” with Cohn. That phrase captures the festival’s framing—and the film’s dramatic argument—not a settled historical explanation. The story is about the formation of Trump’s public and business persona, rather than his later career as host of the reality series also called The Apprentice.
Who was Roy Cohn to Trump in the film?
The film presents Cohn as a powerful guide to Trump during his early career, teaching him an aggressive way to pursue influence and defend his interests. Its origin-story thesis is that this relationship mattered to the person Trump became. That is the film’s interpretation of the relationship; viewers should distinguish it from independently established evidence about how much any particular trait or tactic came from Cohn.

The dramatic structure turns a relationship into an explanation. That can make a complex career legible on screen, but it also concentrates attention on one mentor and one period. The film’s thesis should be read as an argument about influence, not proof that Cohn alone explains Trump’s later conduct or political identity.
Is The Apprentice based on a true story?
It draws on real people and events, but its screenwriter explicitly calls it fiction. In a BFI Southbank interview, Sherman said: “Obviously, it’s based on real events, but it’s a work of fiction.” He said he interviewed people who worked with Trump and Cohn during the period and read books and articles, especially contemporary accounts. He described the film as his interpretation of the two men for a dramatic feature. The BFI programme notes are useful production context, but Sherman’s account does not independently verify every scene.

Sherman also explained that private conversations between Trump and Cohn were imagined because there were no audio recordings of them, and that events were compressed for time. Dialogue should therefore not be treated as a transcript, and the film’s sequencing should not automatically be taken as a literal chronology. The distinction is especially important when a scene makes a private motive or causal link appear certain.
How accurate is the film?
The available production statements establish that the film draws on research while using invention and compression. They do not settle the accuracy of each scene. A careful viewing separates what is publicly documented from what the film reconstructs to make its argument.

- Public events and contemporary accounts: These may provide a basis for the film’s setting and broad chronology, but the film remains a dramatization rather than a documentary record.
- Private dialogue and motives: Sherman says these conversations were imagined. The film’s words and inferred intentions are not independently verifiable transcripts.
- Compressed chronology: Events may be rearranged or condensed for dramatic economy, so a scene’s placement does not by itself establish when or how something happened.
- Causation: The film argues that Cohn influenced Trump. That thesis is not equivalent to proof that the mentor relationship caused later behavior.
The controversy around the release is also not a verdict on accuracy. The Associated Press reported that Trump’s lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter seeking to block the U.S. release, while a campaign spokesman called the film “pure fiction”; the filmmakers described it as fact-based. Those are competing positions attributed to their speakers, not independent findings about the film’s truthfulness.
What should viewers know about the Ivana Trump scene?
The film includes a dramatization of Ivana Trump’s rape allegation. It should not be presented as a judicial finding or as a literal reconstruction. The BFI interview discusses the allegation and her later public statements alongside Sherman’s view of the scene; those elements need to remain distinct. The film’s depiction is a dramatic choice, while the allegation and later statements belong to the public record and should be described with careful attribution. The BFI programme notes provide the screenwriter’s account of the depiction.
