She said she struggled to figure out how to walk using parallel bars in Nairobi after a reported 10-foot fall from a hotel balcony in Tanzania in 2022.
What happened in the Serengeti fall
ABC News reported that Lewis fell about 10 feet from her hotel balcony in the Serengeti. Women’s Health dates the accident to November 2022, during a trip to Tanzania, and reports that she fell into a rocky ravine while walking by her room’s private pool in the dark. ABC News’s March 12, 2024 listing describes the fall and her recovery.
In an account quoted by Women’s Health from an interview with People, Lewis said she stepped off a dark balcony with no railing and described the deck as unsafe: “It was not safe.” That is her description of the setting, not an independently established safety finding about the hotel.
What Lewis meant by “couldn’t remember”
Lewis was recalling an early rehabilitation session in Nairobi, when she was asked to walk using parallel bars. “In Nairobi, when they asked me to walk, you know the parallel bars, I couldn’t remember how to walk… ‘How do you do that?’” she said, in a quote reported by Entertainment Tonight on April 4, 2024. The Tamron Hall interview aired the following day. Entertainment Tonight reported that Lewis became tearful as she recounted the experience.

The phrase concerns the difficulty of relearning the physical act of walking during rehabilitation. The reports cited here do not say that clinicians diagnosed Lewis with amnesia or a broader memory disorder after the fall.
Her injury, treatment and recovery
Women’s Health reports that Lewis fractured her acetabulum, the hip socket, and underwent a nine-hour operation to replace it with titanium. The outlet attributes treatment details to People: Lewis received three blood transfusions, spent six days in intensive care and then ten more days in the hospital. After returning to the United States, she spent four days at Cedars-Sinai for evaluation, followed by two weeks at California Rehabilitation Institute and ten months of physical therapy at home. These are details reported by Women’s Health, not information drawn from medical records.

In a February 2025 interview with Woman’s World, Lewis said, “I couldn’t move. I fought for my life, then I couldn’t walk for eight months.” That eight-month period unable to walk and the ten months of at-home therapy reported in 2024 describe different parts of recovery: being unable to walk is not the same measure as continuing physical therapy.

The listing also mentions her collaboration with Keke Palmer on Audible’s The Weddings of Lady Miss Jacqueline; it does not describe that series as being about the fall.
