It is often described as a cousin relationship, but the documented connection is not a direct biological cousin line: Maivia was considered a blood brother of the Anoa’i family.
How are The Rock and Roman Reigns related?
They belong to connected branches of a wrestling family through the relationship between their grandfathers. WWE describes Peter Maivia, The Rock’s grandfather, as a blood brother of the Anoa’i family. USA Network’s family history says Reverend Amituana’i Anoa’i considered Maivia his blood brother, and that Amituana’i’s sons Afa and Sika thought of Maivia as an uncle.
That kinship explains why the Maivia and Anoa’i families are often discussed together in WWE history. It does not establish that The Rock and Roman Reigns share a direct biological ancestor.
How the family lines connect
Roman Reigns’ Anoa’i branch
USA Network identifies Roman Reigns as Joe Anoa’i and says he is the son of Leati Anoa’i, known in wrestling as Sika. Sika and his brother Afa performed as the Wild Samoans. Their father was Reverend Amituana’i Anoa’i.

The Rock’s Maivia and Johnson branch
WWE identifies Peter Maivia as The Rock’s grandfather. USA Network says Maivia adopted Lia’s daughter Ata. Ata married wrestler Rocky Johnson, and their son was Dwayne Johnson, who became known as The Rock. Because Ata was adopted, this branch should not be presented as proof of a direct biological descent from Maivia.
The point of connection
The two branches meet through the family-recognized bond between Maivia and Amituana’i Anoa’i. Afa and Sika’s view of Maivia as an uncle reflects how that relationship extended across the families.

Are The Rock and Roman Reigns cousins?
“Cousins” is common shorthand in fan discussion and WWE storytelling for their extended family connection. For precision, describe them as members of connected families through their grandfathers’ blood-brother relationship, rather than as direct biological cousins. A 2021 discussion of Samoan American kinship in the Pro Wrestling Studies Journal provides context for why family roles may reflect social ties as well as biological descent: the journal article.

The Anoa’i and Maivia connections are part of a wider wrestling-family story, but not every relative is part of the link between Reigns and The Rock. USA Network identifies Jimmy and Jey Uso as sons of Rikishi and discusses them with Roman in the context of The Bloodline. That on-screen storyline draws on family ties, but its roles and rivalries are not a substitute for the real-world family tree.

Roman Reigns has spoken about the importance of representing his relatives and the generation before him. In an Associated Press report about WWE 2K25, he said: “We’re always trying to represent our family, I’m always trying to represent the elders of my family and the ones that laid down the groundwork and the foundation that we stand on.” The remark expresses the family theme; it was not specifically an explanation of the genealogy.
