Character designer Naoto Ohshima said so in a 2009 interview. A separate interview with co-creator Yuji Naka adds that blue also suggested peace, trust and coolness.
Why is Sonic blue?
Ohshima gave the direct answer in a 2009 interview with Game Developer: “Well, he’s blue because that’s Sega’s more-or-less official company color.” In other words, Sonic did not turn blue in a story event; blue was a deliberate choice in his character design.
Naka offered a related but distinct explanation in a 1996 SEGA.com interview, preserved in the Sonic Stadium archive. He said the color reflected SEGA’s image color and associated blue with “peace, trust, and coolness.” The two accounts both connect Sonic’s color to SEGA, while Naka’s also describes qualities the color could convey.
How did Sonic’s design come together?
SEGA’s retrospective traces Sonic’s creation to a business and game-design problem. The company wanted a mascot to help sell its consoles, while rivals already had recognizable characters. It also wanted a fast-action game that showed off the Mega Drive’s rendering and scrolling capabilities.

- SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DESIGN: Your little gamer will love cuddling up with his new Sonic the Hedgehog pal. The popular SEGA videogame character brings his bold colors and fun spirited attitude to this Sonic Speed Unlimited cuddle pillow.
According to Takashi Iizuka, SEGA executive officer and Sonic Creative Officer, the team needed an attack that would not interrupt the game’s speed. The answer was a hedgehog who could curl into a spiky ball and jump into enemies. Iizuka described the mascot gap as the starting point for Sonic’s creation and the rolling attack as the origin of the hedgehog idea. This explains the character’s shape and gameplay; it is separate from the reason Ohshima gave for his blue color.
SEGA also aimed Sonic at North America, shaping him as a cool, somewhat rebellious hero who helps the weak. That marketing context helps explain the overall character, but it should not be confused with the specific color choice.
