Joy of Urdu is a volunteer-run, bilingual initiative founded by Zarminae Ansari that celebrates Urdu language and heritage through books, reading activities and community gatherings. Its first book, Three Tales from Gulistan-e-Saadi, brings three stories from a 13th-century Persian classic to readers in Urdu and English.

What is Joy of Urdu?

Launched in 2013, Joy of Urdu brings volunteers together around a shared aim: making Urdu’s literary and cultural inheritance inviting to new readers. Its work has included chapters in multiple cities, discussions, interactive reading groups and internships, according to a 2024 profile by Scroll.in and Sapan News.

The initiative is not presented simply as a language course or a social-media project. Its approach combines literary material with opportunities to gather and read together. That can matter for diaspora families in particular: a child may encounter Urdu not only as a language to study, but through stories and cultural references shared with older relatives.

How does the first book make a classic accessible?

Three stories in two languages

Three Tales from Gulistan-e-Saadi retells three stories from Gulistan, the 13th-century work by Persian poet Sheikh Saadi Shirazi, in both Urdu and English. The project took nearly six years to complete, according to the 2024 profile. Its bilingual presentation gives readers a way to move between languages while following the same stories.

Illustrations and activities support the reading

The book includes illustrations, a glossary and activities. Launch-era reporting by The News International describes it as an illustrated bilingual retelling edited by Ansari, with commissioned miniature-style paintings. The stated educational aim was to offer an alternative to conventional approaches to Urdu teaching and perception.

For families and learners, these features suggest several ways to engage with the book: read a story in either language, consult the glossary, look closely at the art, or use the activities to extend the reading. The book is a literary introduction, not evidence of a measured language-learning outcome. Professor and linguistics expert Arfa Sayeda Zehra, quoted in the Scroll/Sapan News feature, described the potential of stories this way: “A story may unlock the enchantment of language belatedly, yet it ignites the sparks of imagination early on.”

Publication details

A listing from Pakistan bookseller Maktaba-e-Danyal, accessed October 8, 2026, identifies the hardbound edition as 77 pages and gives ISBN 978-969-233900-1. The retailer’s stock status can change, so it should be checked directly before ordering.

Why is the project tied to Persianate literary heritage?

Choosing stories from Saadi’s Gulistan connects Urdu readers with a work from a wider Persianate literary tradition. The Scroll/Sapan News feature reports that Ansari sees Persian as less separate from Urdu than political narratives sometimes suggest. That is her perspective on cultural connection, not a settled linguistic consensus.

The choice also offers a route into material familiar to some older generations. A bilingual retelling can make that inheritance more approachable for younger readers without requiring them to begin with an unadapted classical text.

How do gatherings and cultural events sustain a language community?

Books are one part of Joy of Urdu’s work. The 2024 profile describes discussions and interactive reading groups, while an official Pakistan Heritage and Culture Division yearbook records a later launch of the book at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) on December 29, 2024, in collaboration with Joy of Urdu. Dawn’s report on the launch also confirms the event.

These activities make the initiative’s community dimension tangible: people can encounter Urdu through conversation and shared reading, not only through a printed page. The available reporting documents activities and events, but does not provide independent measures of the organisation’s reach or their effect on language learning.

What personal history shaped the initiative?

Ansari’s friendship with Sabeen Mahmud is part of the project’s origin story as recounted in the 2024 profile. Mahmud encouraged her to begin the work; after Mahmud was killed in 2015, Ansari said the loss strengthened her resolve to continue. In Ansari’s recollection, Mahmud urged her: “Just do the work, and you’ll get the help you need.”

Ansari has described the effort as being about a cause rather than personal recognition: “it’s not about me; it’s about a cause”. She also said, “We are not there for likes and follows. We are not influencers or an entertainment hub.” These statements frame Joy of Urdu as a service-oriented effort, though the organisation’s capacity and future work depend on volunteer time and support.

How has Joy of Urdu connected language with political expression?

The 2024 profile describes the initiative’s “Poetry of Resistance” programming in response to Israel’s assault on Gaza after October 7. It featured Urdu poets Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Habib Jalib alongside Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. The feature also reports that Joy of Urdu’s Instagram account was shadow-banned and lost followers. That platform experience is Ansari’s reported account; it is not an independently verified finding about Instagram’s actions.

What was planned, and what is confirmed?

In June 2024, Ansari said six books for adults and children were poised to enter production and mentioned plans for merchandise and workshops. Those were plans reported at that time, not confirmation that the books or other projects have since been completed. The later NAPA launch is documented, but the sources cited here do not establish the status of the other announced projects.
