Alien: Romulus’s damaged android Rook was written into the story before the filmmakers chose to give him Ian Holm’s likeness. Director Fede Álvarez and Ridley Scott connected Rook to Ash by making them androids from the same model line—not the same character. Álvarez said he consulted Holm’s widow and family about using the likeness. Rook’s screen presence combines a practical animatronic, digital effects and a performance by Daniel Betts.
Why is Ian Holm in Alien: Romulus?
Rook’s role came first. Álvarez told the Los Angeles Times that the story already called for a badly damaged android torso to interact with the passengers. The team had decided to build an animatronic before settling on whose face it should have.

Álvarez and Scott then chose to make the android part of the same model line as Ash, the synthetic character Holm played in the original Alien. Álvarez said they considered the franchise’s other synthetic characters and felt Holm was the one synthetic actor who had not returned in another role. He told The National that he and Scott thought Holm was the best synthetic in the franchise and that it felt unfair he had not made a second appearance.
That rationale makes Rook a franchise echo, not a resurrection of Ash. As Álvarez put it to the Los Angeles Times, “The only thing they have in common is the likeness.”

- This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Is Rook Ash in Alien: Romulus?
No. Rook is a new synthetic character whose face resembles Ash’s because the filmmakers made them members of the same android model line. The film does not present Rook as Ash surviving and returning. The shared design is a visual and franchise connection, not an identity claim.
Did Ian Holm’s family approve the likeness?
Álvarez said he contacted Holm’s widow, Sophie de Stempel, who consulted the actor’s children and close family. He described their response as supportive and said they authorized the use of Holm’s likeness. In his Los Angeles Times interview, Álvarez said the production acted “with the authorization of his family, his children and his widow.” This is the director’s account of the consultation and authorization.

How did the film recreate Rook?
Rook was not created through a single technique. The production combined a physical figure, digital enhancement and a human performance. Keeping those parts distinct helps explain why descriptions of the cameo can sound different.
The animatronic and digital effects
Álvarez described an animatronic built in Holm’s image, with puppeteers controlling much of its movement. Effects reporting by Space.com identifies Legacy Effects’ work on Rook’s animatronic. Digital effects enhanced the physical figure for the finished film.

Daniel Betts’ performance and the voice
Actor Daniel Betts contributed to Rook’s performance. Accounts differ on the voice process, so it is important not to reduce the work to the claim that AI simply performed Holm. The Los Angeles Times reported that Betts performed facial capture with the cast and that his voice was transformed to sound more like Holm using generative AI and computer modeling. The National, by contrast, reported that Betts voiced Rook and that the production did not use archival voice recordings or AI to capture the performance. These reports describe the voice work differently; they agree that Betts contributed, while the physical likeness and the performance are separate elements.
