Kenny Omega’s “The Cleaner” nickname began as a dark metaphor: a silent assassin who cleaned up a crime scene after a hit. But many Japanese fans understood “cleaner” literally, so Omega turned the misunderstanding into part of the character, bringing janitorial props such as a broom to the ring. The result mixed menace with deliberate absurdity.
What “The Cleaner” was supposed to mean
Omega described the original idea as “a very cold and calculating silent assassin character,” in a 2016 interview with Sports Illustrated. The premise was that he would clean up after a crime scene—a hitman’s role, not a janitor’s. Bullet Club’s gun imagery helped make that association clear within the group’s presentation.
An ROH event booklet also characterized the concept as a cleaner of crime scenes. It places Omega’s Bullet Club turn in 2014, while a later Sports Illustrated history dates his in-ring debut as a Bullet Club member to Wrestle Kingdom 9 in 2015. Joining the group and first wrestling as one of its members are separate milestones.
Why the nickname became literal
The metaphor did not consistently come across as intended. Omega said that when Japanese fans heard “The Cleaner,” they pictured someone who literally cleaned things rather than an assassin. He found himself explaining the concept repeatedly, then decided to embrace the ordinary meaning instead. Slam Wrestling’s interview account also describes him adopting the literal interpretation.

That choice gave the character a visible joke: Omega could carry cleaning equipment, including a large broom, while still presenting himself as a dangerous figure. Accounts of the act also mention mops and garbage bags. The props did not replace the assassin idea so much as put its intended metaphor beside an unmistakably silly, literal version.

The nickname worked on two levels. “Cleaning up” could suggest a cold hitman removing evidence, while the broom and other janitorial gear made the phrase funny at face value. Omega’s performance joined those tones rather than resolving the joke: the character remained threatening, but his props made the premise knowingly strange.

That contrast is the key to the nickname’s appeal. It was neither simply a hitman moniker nor a janitor gag; the second meaning grew out of how audiences heard the first, and Omega made that gap part of the act.
