That is Foley’s explanation of the move’s on-screen logic—not a verified medical account of nerve pressure or paralysis.
How the Mandible Claw is presented to work
In an interview, Foley described the intended placement as two fingers beneath the opponent’s tongue, pressing down, while the thumb pushes upward beneath the chin. He said the pressure was meant to affect nerves and explained that as the reason the opponent supposedly could not move or bite. These are Foley’s descriptions of the wrestling hold, not established medical findings; the available sources do not verify that the hold paralyzes the jaw or establish a clinical mechanism.
In a match, the hold is sold through its visible hand placement, the opponent’s reaction and the performance around the struggle. It is not simply depicted as fingers shoved down someone’s throat. This is an explanation of a staged wrestling move, not instructions for applying it; attempting to put fingers in someone’s mouth or press on their jaw can cause injury.
Why the hold fits Mankind and Mick Foley
WWE lists the Mandible Claw among Foley’s signature moves. Its Mick Foley biography also traces the Mankind character’s shift from a barbed-wire-wrapped 2-by-4 to Mr. Socko, the sock puppet that became part of Foley’s presentation.

Foley recalled that Jim Cornette suggested the idea and connected it to wrestler Sam Sheppard. Foley also said he pitched the hold as visually clear—with both performers’ faces visible—and as a finishing move that would not require him to rely constantly on elbow drops. Those are Foley’s recollections of the move’s development, not independently established proof of its origin. WWE places it within a wider family of wrestling Claw holds in its retrospective on Claw holds, but that broader context does not settle who originated Foley’s version.
What Mr. Socko adds to the move
Mr. Socko is a sock puppet worn over Foley’s hand when he applies the Mandible Claw. The prop makes the moment visually distinctive and ties the hold to Mankind’s character; it is not shown by the sources to be mechanically necessary to the hold. WWE’s recap of a 2017 Raw segment describes Foley putting his hand into Mr. Socko before applying the move to Triple H: the segment recap.
