Kevin Nash’s Jackknife Powerbomb reportedly caused Paul Wight, then known in WCW as The Giant, a legitimate neck injury after Wight landed on his head. But the available account does not establish that he was nearly paralyzed. That stronger claim should be treated as unverified, not as a confirmed medical outcome.
What happened in the match?
The incident took place when Nash and The Giant met at WCW’s Souled Out 1998. Wrestling Inc.’s December 30, 2018 report, citing Eric Bischoff’s 83 Weeks podcast, says Nash dropped The Giant on his head during a Jackknife Powerbomb and that the move caused a legitimate neck injury.
An Italian-language Wikipedia page for Souled Out 1998 gives the event date as January 24, 1998, and also describes The Giant landing on his head. That page is secondary, user-edited corroboration, so the date and detail should be understood with that limitation.
Was Paul Wight almost paralyzed?
The reviewed reporting does not establish that Wight was almost paralyzed. Wrestling Inc.’s account reports a legitimate neck injury, but supplies no medical diagnosis, hospital record, recovery timeline, or statement from Wight confirming the injury’s severity. No specific diagnosis or paralysis outcome can therefore be stated as fact.

Grantland’s 2012 article describes fans mocking Nash online for “nearly killing” Wight. That is evidence of fan reaction, not confirmation that Wight nearly died or was nearly paralyzed. The dramatic wording in the title is not supported as a verified medical conclusion.
Why is Starrcade 1997 part of the story?
Nash and The Giant were scheduled to wrestle at Starrcade 1997, but that match did not happen. According to Wrestling Inc.’s report of Bischoff’s account, Nash believed he was experiencing heart trouble after a heavy leg workout, went to a hospital for evaluation, and later blood panels reportedly connected elevated enzymes to the workout. The two wrestlers met at Souled Out about a month later; the Starrcade cancellation and the subsequent neck-injury account are separate events.

Which Nash Jackknife Powerbomb is sometimes confused with this incident?
WWE’s historical WCW timeline records Nash using a Jackknife Powerbomb against Goldberg at Starrcade on December 27, 1998. That was a different match later in the year; it is not the Souled Out incident involving The Giant.
