Contemporary reports put Ellen Pompeo’s 2018 Grey’s Anatomy deal at $575,000 per episode and $20 million per year. The agreement was reported to cover seasons 15 and 16. Those figures describe a specific contract period—not a verified total of everything she has earned from the series.
What was Ellen Pompeo’s reported Grey’s Anatomy salary?
In January 2018, ABC News reported that Pompeo’s new deal paid $575,000 per episode, or $20 million per year. ABC News described the reported terms as part of a negotiation that also included backend points and support for her production company, Calamity Jane.
The figures are two ways contemporary coverage described the deal: an episode rate and an annual amount. They should not be treated as proof that she received $20 million for every year she worked on the show, or that the rate continued unchanged after the contract period.
Which seasons did the deal cover?
Coverage at the time tied the agreement to a defined period. CBS News described the agreement in connection with season 14 and seasons 15 and 16, while TheWrap reported that Pompeo renewed through seasons 15 and 16. These reports do not establish the same annual pay for later seasons.

What else was reportedly included?
The $575,000-per-episode figure was not the only compensation described in contemporary reports. Entertainment Tonight reported a seven-figure signing bonus and two full backend equity points, estimating that the points could add $6 million to $7 million. That backend amount was an estimate, not a verified record of money ultimately paid.
Other coverage described producing-related compensation and a role as executive producer on a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. Those are distinct from her acting rate. Fortune summarized the reported deal elements, including producing fees and backend participation connected with the spinoff, but the reports do not provide a complete public accounting of all payments.

How does the reported deal compare with her earlier earnings?
TheWrap reported that Pompeo earned $13 million in 2017, mostly from Grey’s Anatomy, while also noting an endorsement deal. That was a reported estimate of her earnings for that year, not a disclosed contractual salary. It is therefore not directly interchangeable with the 2018 deal’s reported per-episode rate or annual figure.
What did Pompeo say about negotiating her pay?
Pompeo linked her willingness to negotiate more assertively to Patrick Dempsey’s 2015 departure. CBS News quoted her calling it a “defining moment, deal-wise” and reporting her view that the studio and network had used Dempsey’s presence as leverage against her. That is Pompeo’s account of the negotiations, not an independently established description of every factor in them.

In her account of the deal, Pompeo also said she had become comfortable asking for what she believed she deserved. TIME quoted her discussing that change as she reflected on her age and experience.

The available reports establish the widely cited 2018 deal terms and describe some additional compensation, but they do not give an audited career total. A cumulative figure would need to account for her pay across multiple contracts and seasons, as well as bonuses, residuals, backend participation, and producing work. The published estimates cited here do not add up to that complete accounting.
A later Good Morning America article reiterated the $575,000-per-episode and $20-million-per-year figures. It repeated the 2018 report; it was not a new salary disclosure for 2020.
