Luigi Mangione’s Federal Case: Guilty Plea, Charges and What Happens Next

Luigi Mangione’s federal case is no longer at the charging stage: on August 14, 2026, he pleaded guilty to two federal stalking counts in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2026. The December 2024 federal filing was a criminal complaint—not an indictment—and the separate New York State prosecution remains a distinct case.

What happened in the federal case?

On December 19, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that a federal criminal complaint had been unsealed against Mangione over Thompson’s December 4 killing in Midtown Manhattan. The complaint listed four counts:

  • Using a firearm to commit murder.
  • Interstate stalking resulting in death.
  • Stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death.
  • Discharging a firearm equipped with a silencer in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Those were allegations in a complaint, not findings of guilt. DOJ’s December 19, 2024 announcement described the charges as allegations and said defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The case later reached a different stage: DOJ reported that Mangione pleaded guilty to two stalking counts in August 2026.

What did Mangione plead guilty to?

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Mangione pleaded guilty on August 14, 2026, to one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of cyberstalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. DOJ said each count carries a maximum potential sentence of life imprisonment; the judge determines the sentence. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 18, 2026.

The plea was to those two federal stalking counts. It should not be described as a plea to the murder or firearm counts listed in the 2024 complaint. The available DOJ announcement does not state that a sentence had been imposed as of October 8, 2026.

How is the New York State case different?

The state prosecution is separate from the federal case. The Manhattan District Attorney announced an 11-count New York State Supreme Court indictment on December 17, 2024—two days before the federal complaint was unsealed.

Federal Criminal complaint unsealed December 19, 2024 Four counts were listed in the complaint. DOJ reported guilty pleas to two stalking counts on August 14, 2026; sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2026.
New York State 11-count indictment announced December 17, 2024 The announced counts included first-degree murder, two second-degree murder counts, weapon-possession counts and one forged-instrument count. A May 18, 2026 suppression ruling addressed evidence and statements but did not itself resolve the prosecution.

The state indictment’s allegations are not federal charges, and the federal complaint’s four counts should not be added to the state indictment’s 11. The Manhattan DA’s announcement said Mangione is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty on the state charges.

What remains unresolved?

The federal sentencing had not yet occurred as of October 8, 2026; DOJ’s announced date was December 18, 2026. The May 2026 state-court order was a procedural ruling on suppression, not a final disposition of the state prosecution. The official materials summarized here do not establish a final outcome in that separate state case.
