Sarah Silverman kept the surprise from then-boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel by lying about where she was touring. The plan came together in Miami, where Silverman and Matt Damon wrote and filmed the comic music video on a tight schedule before it was revealed to Kimmel on his show in 2008.
Silverman hid the plan by lying about her tour
The idea came from Jimmy Kimmel Live! writers Tony Barbieri and Sal Iacono. Silverman later recalled that she was touring in Miami, where Damon was living at the time, and had to give Kimmel a different account of her whereabouts so he would not discover the surprise. “I remember I had to lie to him about where I was on tour, and I’m not good at that at all,” she said, in comments reported by AOL / Entertainment Weekly.
How the rushed Miami shoot came together
A song written and recorded in a hurry
Silverman said the group wrote the song quickly and recorded it the night before filming. “We wrote the song like in a fury and recorded it, and one of the guy’s did Matt’s voice,” she recalled, according to TheWrap.
Damon’s closet recording and four-location shoot
Silverman recalled that Damon had about three hours with the team and needed to leave by noon for his daughter’s Halloween pageant. He learned and recorded his part in a hotel closet; the team then played the recording back and lip-synced while filming at four locations. “It was run-and-gun and it came out so great,” she said. The three-hour window and four-location count are Silverman’s recollections as reported by TheWrap, not independently measured production records.

The joke built on a running bit in which Kimmel would apologize for running out of time before Damon could appear as a guest. The Los Angeles Times’ history of the gag places Silverman’s birthday video in 2008 and notes that Kimmel soon responded with the “F*@#ing Ben Affleck” video.
