Director Martin Davidson replaced him with Perry King after a conflict with Sylvester Stallone. Stallone later described the dispute as beginning with an overly rough rehearsal and escalating into a physical confrontation during lunch; those vivid details are his recollection, not independently confirmed facts.
Why was Richard Gere fired from The Lords of Flatbush?
The established outcome is straightforward: Gere was removed during production, and Davidson chose to keep Stallone and replace Gere. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) summarizes the departure as a conflict between Gere and Stallone, with King taking over the role of Chico. TCM also notes that Stallone contributed dialogue to the film, placing him in the production beyond his role as Stanley. TCM’s film history and credits
The specific explanation most often repeated comes from Stallone himself. His accounts describe two clashes: contact during an improvised fight rehearsal, then an argument in a car at lunch that turned physical. The broad conflict is reflected in TCM’s account; the detailed sequence is Stallone’s version.
What happened between Stallone and Gere on set?
The rehearsal disagreement
In Stallone’s account, Gere grabbed his shirt during an improvised simulated fight. Stallone said he warned him to stop, but the contact happened again on another take. Recalling the incident in his memoir The Steps, Stallone said, “Gere grabbed my T-shirt and his fingernails dug into my skin. I told him to back off, but he did it again on the second take.” The Independent’s report on Stallone’s memoir

Stallone said he asked director Stephen Verona whether he could respond as he would in real life. His reported answer was: “Do? I’d knock his teeth out.” That line is Stallone recounting his own exchange with Verona; it is not a statement from Gere or an independently verified transcript.
The lunch-break altercation
Stallone’s version continues with a lunch break in a Toyota. He recalled that chicken grease and mustard got on his leg and said he objected: “That thing is going to drip on me.” He said he elbowed Gere and pushed him out of the car. According to Stallone’s telling, Verona separated them and then decided Gere had to leave because the two actors could not work together.
