Netflix helped transform home video, but the evidence does not show that it single-handedly caused Blockbuster’s bankruptcy or ended physical media. It made DVD rental more convenient, moved into streaming, and eventually shut down its own DVD-by-mail service. Those changes reshaped how many people watched films; they did not make discs disappear.
What did Netflix change about renting films?
Netflix’s early advantage was not simply that customers could order a DVD online. Its subscription model changed the routine and economics of renting: customers could keep discs without late fees, rather than making a trip to a store for each rental. The Associated Press described Netflix mailing millions of discs a week from distribution centers at the service’s peak. That account helps explain the appeal of delivery, though it is not a study measuring how much any one feature caused Blockbuster’s decline.
The contrast was between a store-centered rental experience and having discs delivered. Netflix reduced the need for a store visit and removed late fees from its subscription approach. The available evidence supports that comparison, but does not provide a complete account of Blockbuster’s finances, management decisions, or bankruptcy.
How did Netflix move from DVDs to streaming?
Netflix’s 2012 Form 10-K says its streaming service launched in 2007. At the time of that filing, Netflix described its U.S. service as combining streaming with DVDs by mail and identified growing streaming domestically and internationally as its core strategy. That chronology matters: streaming did not instantly replace the DVD service. Netflix operated both while it shifted its strategic focus.

The company’s filing also records a costly misstep. In July 2011, Netflix separated DVD-only plans from streaming plans and made related price and branding changes. Netflix said the changes led to significant customer cancellations. The episode complicates any story in which Netflix simply made one flawless transition while its competitors failed to adapt.
Netflix’s 2012 filing also described competition from other internet video services, DVD rental outlets and kiosks, and entertainment retailers. The market was broader than a two-company contest between Netflix and Blockbuster.

What happened to Netflix’s DVD service?
Netflix continued mailing discs for years after streaming launched. In September 2023, the Associated Press reported that Netflix was mailing its final discs from five remaining distribution centers. Fewer than one million people still subscribed near the service’s closure, according to AP. The same report said the DVD service had reached more than 20 million subscribers at its peak and had a library of more than 100,000 titles.
Those figures describe Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service, not the whole physical-media market. Netflix’s chief executive when the company shipped its first DVD, Marc Randolph, told AP: “We knew this day was coming, but the miraculous thing is that it didn’t come 15 years ago.”

Did Netflix kill Blockbuster?
Netflix changed the competitive landscape by offering a different way to rent films, then by investing in streaming. That makes it part of the story of Blockbuster’s decline, but the evidence here does not establish Netflix as the sole cause of Blockbuster’s bankruptcy. A detailed explanation of Blockbuster’s financial condition, management choices, or the precise causes of its failure would require evidence beyond the available reporting and Netflix filings.
Netflix’s own account is useful for its launch date, strategy, competition, and the consequences of its 2011 plan changes. It cannot, by itself, prove why Blockbuster failed. The AP retrospective provides context on Netflix’s DVD business and mentions an acquisition offer, but that mention alone does not establish that Blockbuster rejected an offer or that such a decision caused its collapse.

Did Netflix kill all physical media?
No. Netflix ending its DVD-by-mail service marked the end of Netflix’s own disc-rental operation, not the disappearance of DVDs or Blu-rays. AP noted that discs could still serve viewers looking for films that were difficult to find through streaming. Streaming availability varies by title, so a disc can remain useful when the film a viewer wants is not readily available through a streaming service.
Watching a disc requires a compatible player. A DVD or Blu-ray player can support playback for people who use physical collections, but format compatibility matters; no single player should be assumed to handle every disc format. The evidence cited here supports the continued usefulness of discs for some hard-to-find films, but it does not establish the size of today’s physical-media market.
