Gladiator II borrows the name of Lucius Verus, a real son of Lucilla, but gives him a different father, a much longer life and an invented history as a gladiator. The film’s adult Lucius is best understood as a fictional character built around historical names and a Roman imperial setting—not as a faithful account of Lucilla’s son.
Was Lucius a real historical figure?
Yes. Lucilla, daughter of Marcus Aurelius, had a son named Lucius Verus. But the historical child died young, before the reign of Commodus. The adult survivor at the centre of Gladiator II is not that child’s documented biography continued into adulthood; the film reimagines him.

The name can be confusing because Lucius Verus was also the name of Lucilla’s husband, the co-emperor who ruled alongside Marcus Aurelius. In the film, Lucius is presented as the son of Lucilla and Maximus, the fictional protagonist of the first Gladiator. Historically, Lucilla’s son was fathered by Lucius Verus.
The Smithsonian Magazine’s historical overview distinguishes the real imperial figures from Maximus and the sequel’s invented version of Lucius. An Ohio State-hosted overview likewise says Lucilla’s son died young.

How does the film change Lucius’ origin?
| Question | Historical Lucius | Gladiator II |
|---|---|---|
| Who was his father? | Lucius Verus, Lucilla’s husband and co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius. | Maximus, a fictional character, is presented as his father. |
| How long did he live? | He died young, before Commodus’ reign. | He survives into adulthood in the sequel’s later setting. |
| What was his life like? | The cited historical overviews establish his parentage and early death, not an adult career. | The film gives him the alias Hanno, a Numidian exile, a wife, capture, enslavement and an arena career. |
| What happens to Lucilla? | She was executed in 182 CE after a plot against Commodus. | She remains a major character in the later story involving Geta and Caracalla. |
The film’s changes therefore go well beyond a single altered detail: they change Lucius’ paternity, lifespan, identity and life events, while also moving Lucilla beyond her historical chronology. The date of her execution is reported in the Smithsonian overview and the Ohio State-hosted overview.
Was Lucius the son of Maximus in real life?
No. Maximus is fictional, and the historical Lucius Verus was the son of Lucilla and Lucius Verus. The father-son connection in Gladiator II is a dramatic invention that links the sequel’s hero to the first film, not a claim supported by the historical record. Secondary explainers from Radio Times and Biography.com also distinguish the film’s version from the historical son.

- From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.
What is real in the sequel’s Roman setting?
The film uses real names and imperial history, including Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, Geta, Caracalla and Lucilla. That historical backdrop does not make its central family story factual: Maximus is invented, and Lucius’ adult survival and arena career belong to the film’s plot.
The arena setting has historical context of its own, but it cannot verify Lucius’ supposed career. TIME notes that gladiators came from varied backgrounds, including enslaved people, condemned criminals and prisoners of war, while also describing how limited the surviving accounts of individual bouts are. Classicist Mary Beard told TIME: “People are often surprised by the fact that we only have one description, in a poem from the end of the first century AD, of an individual gladiatorial contest between two gladiators.” That evidence is about the limits of what can be said about arena combat, not about Lucilla’s son.

For the same reason, the film’s vivid arena story should not be treated as a reconstruction of Lucius’ life. The historical evidence cited here supports his identity as Lucilla’s son and his early death; it does not establish that he was exiled, enslaved or fought as a gladiator.
