Lady Gaga’s Harlequin is a companion album inspired by her portrayal of Lee/Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. It pairs interpretations of familiar songs with two originals, using a musical approach Gaga described as an act of love and dedication to the character.
What is Harlequin?
Released on September 27, 2024, ahead of the U.S. theatrical release of Joker: Folie à Deux, Harlequin is a 13-track companion album inspired by Gaga’s role as Lee, also known as Harley Quinn. Gaga’s official album page frames it as a musical exploration of the character and identifies it as a companion piece to the film. Universal Music Japan’s September 27, 2024 announcement gives the track count and release date.
Apple Music characterizes the album as delivered from Lee Quinzel’s perspective. That is the service’s description of the concept, rather than a direct statement from Gaga. Apple Music’s album listing offers that framing for listeners.
How Gaga’s portrayal shaped the music
Gaga connected the project directly to her performance. In an Associated Press report published September 27, 2024, she said: “This album was made with grace and a lot of focus and real love and dedication for Harley Quinn.” The AP also reported that Gaga was initially uncertain about the project’s direction before embracing the challenge of pushing its sound. The character was also being reimagined visually for the film, rather than simply reproduced from earlier versions. In a Vogue interview published October 1, 2024, Gaga said she and stylist Arianne Phillips faced a “tall order” because audiences already had an idea of Harley Quinn, and they wanted to create something new. Vogue’s interview with Gaga provides the context for that approach.
Which songs are covers, and which are originals?
The album combines interpretations of existing songs with two original compositions. Gaga’s official album description names “Good Morning” and “Get Happy” among the classics. Universal Music Japan also names “Oh, When the Saints” among the tracks. The two originals are “Happy Mistake” and “Folie à Deux,” as identified in the AP’s September 27, 2024 report.

What does the album sound like?
The AP describes the palette as drawing on jazz, funk, blues, early American music, and both vintage and modern pop. That is the outlet’s description of the sound, not a formal genre classification from Gaga or her label. The mixture gives the project room to move between familiar song material and new writing while keeping its focus on the film’s character.
Is Harlequin the Joker: Folie à Deux soundtrack?
It is best described as a companion album, not automatically as the film’s official soundtrack: Gaga’s album page uses the companion-piece framing. The sources cited here do not provide a complete song-by-song comparison between Harlequin and the film’s official soundtrack, so they do not establish which songs appear on both releases.
