Leta is an earlier Lestrange in the Fantastic Beasts era; Bellatrix was born into the Black family and took the Lestrange name when she married Rodolphus. Their shared surname alone does not establish that they were cousins or otherwise directly related.
Why they share the Lestrange name
The key distinction is between a birth family and a married surname. Wizarding World describes Bellatrix as one of the Black sisters and says she married Rodolphus Lestrange. Its feature on the Black family likewise identifies Bellatrix as the eldest sister, alongside Narcissa and Andromeda. Wizarding World’s account of the three sisters and its character guide therefore establish Bellatrix as a Lestrange by marriage, not by birth.

Leta, by contrast, is presented as a member of the Lestrange family. Sharing that family name does not, by itself, show how her branch connects to Rodolphus’s or Bellatrix’s.
What the timeline tells us—and what it does not
Leta belongs to the earlier period depicted in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, set in the 1920s. The Wizarding World character guide places her generations before Rodolphus’s era, but does not establish her precise position in the family tree. The same guide describes Leta as engaged to Theseus Scamander; that relationship does not clarify her connection to Bellatrix.
#1 Best Overall
A separate Wizarding World feature on the Lestrange family discusses its French ancestry and the Corvus Lestrange and Kama storyline, and calls Leta a much earlier Lestrange. It does not identify a common ancestor shared by Leta and Bellatrix or provide a specific kinship between them.
Are Leta and Bellatrix cousins?
The official sources reviewed do not call them cousins, aunt and niece, or ancestor and descendant. They also do not name a shared ancestor or give a cousin degree. That means the precise relationship is unconfirmed in those sources—not that every possible family connection has been disproved.
Rank #2
The Wizarding World feature on the Sacred Twenty-Eight lists Bellatrix among Sirius Black’s cousins and describes Bellatrix and Rodolphus as Lestranges. It helps establish Bellatrix’s Black-family ties and her married name, but does not connect her genealogically to Leta.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to take from the books and films
Bellatrix first appeared in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to the Wizarding World character guide. The book is a source for Bellatrix’s story, but it does not establish how she is related to Leta. The available official material supports a careful answer: Leta is an earlier Lestrange, Bellatrix married into the Lestrange family, and their exact kinship has not been stated in the sources cited here.
