The first dispute centered on a scene involving Ivana Trump; the later edit was described only in broad terms, so the available reporting does not establish a scene-by-scene comparison.
What changed before the Cannes premiere?
The Washington Post reported that Kinematics, the production company, sent a letter shortly before the May 2024 premiere requesting several changes to the film, including removing or toning down the scene involving Ivana Trump. The Post’s account drew on documents and people involved in the negotiations, some of whom spoke anonymously.
According to the Post, the other requested changes were made, but the filmmakers kept the Ivana scene. Abbasi described it as “a very important turning point in the story.” The report also described denials and conflicting explanations around the dispute, so claims about the parties’ motives should not be treated as settled fact. The Washington Post’s account of the pre-Cannes dispute.
What was in the Cannes version?
The Festival de Cannes catalog lists The Apprentice as a 2024 competition film directed by Abbasi, written by Gabriel Sherman, and running 120 minutes. Sebastian Stan plays Donald Trump, Jeremy Strong plays Roy Cohn, and Maria Bakalova plays Ivana Trump. The catalog confirms the film’s festival details, not how its edit changed afterward. The Ivana scene remained in the film screened at Cannes. The Associated Press framed the movie as a focused story about Trump and Cohn, rather than a complete account of Trump’s life. Abbasi put it this way: “This is not a biopic of Donald Trump.” He added that the filmmakers were “not interested in every detail of his life going from A to Z” but in a specific story told through Trump’s relationship with Cohn and Cohn’s relationship with him. What changed after Abbasi regained final cut?
An October interview excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter says Abbasi later regained final cut and revisited the full edit, adding and removing key moments and refining sequences, including the controversial scene. That supports the conclusion that the later version was revised; it does not identify which moments were added or removed or explain precisely how the Ivana scene was altered. Without a detailed account or a reliable comparison of both versions, claims about specific post-Cannes scene changes would go beyond what the reporting establishes. The Hollywood Reporter interview.

How to understand the two editing stages
| Stage | What the reporting establishes | What remains unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Before Cannes | The Washington Post reported that Kinematics requested several changes, including removing or toning down the Ivana scene; the other requests were reportedly made, while the scene stayed. | The parties’ accounts and explanations differed, and some details came from anonymous sources. |
| After Cannes | The Hollywood Reporter interview excerpt says Abbasi regained final cut and added and removed key moments while refining sequences, including the controversial scene. | The excerpt does not enumerate the edits or provide a version-by-version scene comparison. |
The two stages are not the same dispute: the first concerned requests made while preparing the festival cut; the second was a later revision under Abbasi’s final cut. The Cannes catalog’s 120-minute runtime is a listing for the film, not evidence of how many minutes or scenes changed between versions.
