The shoot ran short on time and money before the team could film everything in the script. After Shelby Oaks premiered at Fantasia in 2024 and Neon acquired it, three additional shooting days let Stuckmann restore some abandoned material.
How much did the Shelby Oaks Kickstarter raise?
The campaign raised $1,390,845 from 14,720 backers against a $250,000 goal. It ran from March 1 to March 27, 2022, according to the Kickstarter campaign page. The headline figure is often rounded to $1.4 million.
That is the campaign’s gross pledge total, not a verified final film budget or a statement of how much cash remained for production after campaign costs and reward obligations. The sources reporting the campaign do not provide an audited spending breakdown or establish the net funds available to shoot the movie.
Why did Stuckmann turn to Kickstarter?
Stuckmann began developing Shelby Oaks from a YouTube sketch in 2016, then worked the idea into a feature with his wife. He met producer Aaron Koontz at Fantastic Fest in 2019. TheWrap reported that the pair initially raised $150,000, but COVID-related delays intervened, and they concluded the version they could make for that amount was not the film they wanted to make. The Kickstarter was a way to pursue a more ambitious version, not evidence that every production expense had been covered.

Why did the production run out of money?
The practical problem was a mismatch between the work still on the schedule and the time and money available to do it. In an interview with Rough Draft Atlanta, Stuckmann recalled that about halfway through filming, the first assistant director asked whether any remaining scheduled material could be cut. The production did not have enough time, and overtime was unaffordable. Stuckmann said he removed wish-list moments rather than continue trying to fit them into a shoot that could not support them.
Some omitted material involved costly effects. As Stuckmann told Rue Morgue: “Well, these were some expensive elements relating to animals and gore and stuff that just absolutely destroy any day on an indie movie.” The sources do not provide a complete inventory of what was cut, nor a final accounting of the original shoot.

How did Shelby Oaks get finished?
Shelby Oaks premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in 2024. After Neon acquired the film, Stuckmann and the team returned for three additional days of photography. Those days enabled some material that had been abandoned during the original shoot—including animal and gore work—to be filmed and restored.
Stuckmann described the offer to TheWrap this way: “I said, ‘Well, we ran out of money.’ And they said, ‘Well, what if you had more money and time?’ We went back for three days.” TheWrap also discusses a 2024 Fantastic Fest screening; that event should not be confused with the Fantasia premiere. The reporting establishes the three extra days, but does not state how much Neon contributed or quantify its impact on the budget.

What changed between the festival and theatrical versions?
The additional photography changed the film by restoring some planned material, but the available interviews do not supply a full scene-by-scene comparison of the festival and later theatrical cuts. It is accurate to say that some moments were added after Neon came aboard; it is not possible from these accounts to give a complete list of all differences or assign every change to a particular version.
Mike Flanagan, who backed the Kickstarter and later joined Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka as an executive producer, supported Stuckmann after seeing a rough cut. In a statement reported by Reactor, Flanagan said: “It’s been inspiring to watch Chris working toward his dreams over the past few years, and the tenacity and DIY spirit he displayed while bringing Shelby Oaks to life reminded me so much of my own journey over a decade ago.”

What the $1.4 million figure does—and does not—tell you
- It does tell you: Kickstarter recorded $1,390,845 pledged by 14,720 backers against a $250,000 goal.
- It does not tell you: the final production budget, the net amount available after campaign expenses and rewards, or how much additional money Neon provided.
- It does explain: how a campaign that exceeded its stated goal could still leave a production unable to shoot every planned scene. The campaign total and the actual resources available on set are different measures.
Are the Kickstarter rewards the same as the retail Blu-ray?
No. A BackerKit campaign FAQ updated September 16, 2025 discussed Kickstarter backer discs that were still being finalized at that time. Separately, a November 19, 2025 Rue Morgue interview described an extras-packed retail Blu-ray/DVD release scheduled for January 6, 2026. A backer reward and a retail edition are distinct releases, and those dated reports alone do not establish current stock, edition contents, region compatibility, or shipping status.
