The commonly cited explanation is that spending a century frozen in the Avatar State drained his life energy. The sequel confirms that Aang and Sokka are dead, shows Katara, Toph, and Zuko alive, and leaves Suki’s fate unconfirmed.
How did Aang die?
Aang was 12 when he entered suspended animation in an iceberg and remained frozen for 100 years. He then lived for roughly 54 years after the end of the Hundred Year War. That timeline is why accounts commonly describe his age at death as 66 biologically, rather than 166: the century in the iceberg is counted as elapsed time, not as years of ordinary aging.
The commonly reported explanation is that remaining in the Avatar State while frozen depleted his life energy. The material available does not establish a separate terminal illness, fatal injury, or enemy attack, so those should not be presented as the cause. The age and mechanism are reported in secondary references; they are less firmly established than the sequel’s confirmation that Aang had died.

Katara and Aang’s family

The Legend of Korra establishes that Sokka is no longer alive by the time of the sequel, but the available information does not specify how he died or his exact age. Treat explanations about a particular illness, battle, or other cause as speculation unless supported by an explicit canon source.

Does Suki die?
Suki’s absence from The Legend of Korra does not establish that she died. The available summary says she is neither depicted nor mentioned, leaving her later fate unresolved in that series. An absence from the story is not a death confirmation.
