Lee Cronin’s phrase “mummification for a different purpose” describes a shift in the story’s focus: away from the familiar royal mummy and toward the unsettling question of why an ordinary person—or someone a family loves—would be mummified. What does “mummification for a different purpose” mean?
“This movie looks at mummification for a different purpose,” Cronin told RTÉ. The phrase points to the story’s central change in perspective: the mummy is not simply an ancient ruler whose tomb has been disturbed. Cronin starts with a more intimate question: “What if a loved one was mummified?”
That question gives the premise its emotional charge. Instead of treating mummification only as a relic of an ancient royal world, the film asks what it would mean for a family to confront the remains of someone close to them—and to search for an explanation. The premise is a creative choice for a horror story, not a claim about how mummification historically worked.
How the family mystery replaces the royal-tomb setup
Many familiar mummy stories use kings, queens, pharaohs or other elites to establish a grand, distant setting. Cronin’s stated approach brings the horror into a domestic context. In his Entertainment Weekly interview, he called it “a really scary mummy movie” and said it was “also a mummy movie partly set in a domestic context.”

Why the domestic setting matters to the horror
A family-centered mystery makes the supernatural premise personal. Cronin identifies body horror and possession as part of the film’s approach, alongside its frightening tone. Those elements bring the threat close to the people trying to understand it: the fear is not limited to entering a tomb or uncovering an artifact, but extends into the family’s own world.

The interviews describe a daughter who has been missing for eight years and is then found in an ancient sarcophagus. That is the film’s plot context, not evidence about historical burial customs. It connects the intimate question—what if a loved one was mummified?—to a discovery that forces the family to confront both the mystery of her disappearance and the horror of her return.
Egyptian lore as inspiration, not historical proof
RTÉ reports that the production was made in Ireland and Spain and was inspired by Egyptian lore. Cronin has also described his interest in mummies in terms of buried secrets and the unease of disturbing the dead. That is his creative reflection on the subject, rather than an archaeological or Egyptological explanation of mummification.

The distinction matters: the film draws on the imagery and atmosphere associated with Egyptian lore to build a modern horror story, while its “different purpose” is a narrative premise about a family and a loved one. The available interviews establish that framing; they do not establish that the film is intended as a documentary or a historically authoritative account.
