Brock Lesnar’s connection to Canada grew out of his affinity for Saskatchewan’s countryside, wildlife and hunting and fishing. In 2013, he said he wanted to become a Saskatchewan resident, obtain dual citizenship and raise his children on a farm there. By UFC 200 in 2016, he said he represented Canada because he lived in Saskatchewan. The exact date and legal route of his Canadian citizenship, however, are not established by the available reporting.
Why Brock Lesnar wanted to live in Saskatchewan
Lesnar’s interest in Saskatchewan was personal and rooted in rural life. At a Saskatchewan event in 2013, he said he loved the country and its wildlife, and wanted his children to grow up working on a farm and develop a strong work ethic. He also said he hoped to become a Saskatchewan resident and obtain dual citizenship. Global News / The Canadian Press reported his comments in 2013.
In 2016, Lesnar again connected his choice of Saskatchewan to outdoor pursuits, particularly hunting and fishing. Asked why he was representing Canada ahead of UFC 200, he answered, “Quite simple: I live there.” MMA Fighting reported the interview on July 9, 2016. He did not want to discuss the politics of the choice.
What is known about Lesnar’s Canadian citizenship
The public record in these reports shows a progression, but not the legal details of a citizenship application or grant:

- 2013 — stated intention: Lesnar said he wanted Saskatchewan residency and dual citizenship.
- 2016 — stated residence and representation: Ahead of UFC 200, he said he represented Canada because he lived in Saskatchewan.
- Grant date and route — unverified: The reporting does not establish when he became a Canadian citizen or what legal process he used. Representing Canada at a sporting event does not, by itself, prove citizenship.
Canadian federal guidance says that a person granted citizenship as an adult is a citizen and can receive a citizenship certificate as proof. It also explains that living in Canada for years as a permanent resident does not automatically make someone a citizen. Canadian law permits dual citizenship, though another country’s rules may restrict it. These general rules explain what citizenship means; they do not confirm Lesnar’s individual file or grant date. See the Government of Canada’s citizenship guidance and dual-citizenship guidance.
How his illness in Manitoba fits into the story
Lesnar’s Saskatchewan plans came despite a difficult medical experience he described after becoming ill during a hunting trip in Manitoba in late 2009. According to his account in later reporting, he spent a painful period at a hospital in Brandon, then traveled with his wife to Bismarck, North Dakota, where he was diagnosed with diverticulitis. Global News / The Canadian Press reported that his 2011 autobiography, Death Clutch: My Story of Determination, Domination, and Survival, recounts the experience.

The same reporting described a difference in perspective: Lesnar criticized the care he said he received, while the local health authority’s CEO characterized the hospital as well-equipped and staffed. These are attributed accounts, not an independent assessment of the care or of Canadian health services overall.
Lesnar said the episode did not change his interest in becoming Canadian, describing it as something that could have happened anywhere. In the 2013 report, he said, “That doesn’t deter me from becoming a Canadian citizen, no it doesn’t.” His explanation makes the apparent contradiction straightforward: he could criticize his own medical experience and still want to live in Saskatchewan.
