Murdoch Mysteries made its musical episode part of the mystery: after Detective William Murdoch is shot and falls into a coma, the witnesses’ accounts reach him as songs. That point-of-view device let the series stage a musical without abandoning the case at its center.
How the musical fits the mystery
“Why Is Everybody Singing?” is Season 17, Episode 22. Murdoch’s colleagues continue investigating after he is shot and slips into a coma. As they interview witnesses, Murdoch experiences their accounts in musical form. The songs therefore belong to his subjective coma world, not to a sudden change in how the show’s ordinary world works. The Canadian Academy’s episode synopsis describes the shooting and coma, while director Laurie Lynd told TV Insider that the story remains a puzzling case whose reality is not what it first appears to be.

That structure gave the production two jobs: make room for musical numbers, and keep the audience oriented in a mystery. Lynd said Paul Aitken’s script stayed “at heart a classic Murdoch episode.” The musical sequences are not a substitute for the investigation; they are the form Murdoch’s mind gives the information coming from it.
A long-developed idea, not a last-minute stunt
The musical had been discussed for years. In a StratfordToday interview, Lynd said Aitken had written an initial draft at least five years before filming and continued developing its music and lyrics. Lynd also said fans had repeatedly asked to see a musical episode, and that executive producer Christina Jennings supported the idea.

By the time the idea reached production, its novelty had to serve the series rather than overwhelm it. Lynd and choreographer Tim French shared a familiarity with classic Hollywood and Broadway musicals, and aimed to connect Murdoch’s imagined musical world to his period and perspective. As Lynd put it in TV Insider, “A musical episode of Murdoch Mysteries seemed wonderfully inevitable.”
How the cast and crew made it workable
Direction and choreography worked together
Lynd directed the episode and French choreographed it. Their collaboration drew on shared theatre and film references, but the practical aim was not to make the regular cast look like a company of professional dancers. Lynd praised French’s ability to help performers who were not technically dancers feel comfortable with movement and make the choreography achievable.
The performers sang and danced themselves
The cast performed its own singing and dancing. That meant the musical work had to fit around the other scenes and rehearsals being made for the season, rather than take over the production calendar. The StratfordToday report describes the team finding time between rehearsals and scenes; it does not give an exact rehearsal-hour total.
The episode sat within a full season schedule
Season 17 contained 24 episodes, according to Ovation TV’s season announcement. The musical was one installment in that larger production, so the challenge was to make the special singing and choreography possible alongside the normal season workload. The available production accounts do not specify a detailed rehearsal calendar, a song count, recording workflow, or budget.
