He becomes king amid a disputed succession: his older half-sister Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne is usurped by him.
Who is Aegon II Targaryen?
HBO identifies Aegon as King Aegon II Targaryen, the first-born son of the late King Viserys. He is a dragonrider who sits the Iron Throne. HBO’s season-two character description says he is eager to prove himself as a leader.
The number “II” distinguishes him from the other Targaryens named Aegon. It also makes clear which Aegon is at the center of the succession conflict in the series.
How is Aegon related to Rhaenyra and the rest of his family?
- Viserys: Aegon’s father and the late king.
- Alicent Hightower: Aegon’s mother.
- Rhaenyra: Aegon’s older half-sister and rival claimant to the Iron Throne.
- Aemond: Aegon’s younger brother.
- Helaena: Aegon’s sister-wife.
Why does Aegon’s kingship put him at odds with Rhaenyra?
The conflict is a disputed succession, not an uncontested transfer of power. HBO describes Rhaenyra’s claim as having been usurped by her younger half-brother, Aegon II. That framing explains the central political divide: Aegon sits the Iron Throne while Rhaenyra’s claim is challenged.

What is Aegon’s role in House of the Dragon?
Aegon is both a dragonrider and a king. His position gives him a public role as ruler, while HBO’s season-two description presents him as eager to prove his leadership. The official description cited here does not name his dragon.
How does Aegon fit into the series’ story?
House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and tells the story of House Targaryen. Warner Bros. Discovery describes the series as taking place 300 years before Game of Thrones; that is the franchise’s stated chronology, not an independently measured figure.
