Laena Velaryon believes she will not survive childbirth, so she chooses to die by Vhagar’s fire rather than in the birthing bed. In House of the Dragon, it is a deliberate final act; showrunner Ryan Condal said the choice reflects her identity as a dragon rider.
Why did Laena choose Vhagar’s fire?
In Season 1, Episode 6, Laena is in a dangerous labor that is not progressing. She understands that she will not survive. When Daemon does not proceed with the proposed intervention, Laena leaves to find Vhagar and gives the dragon the command to burn her. Sky’s episode guide describes her choice as opting for Vhagar rather than dying in the birthing bed.
Her immediate reason is clear: she expects to die during labor and chooses how to meet that death. The scene gives her a final decision when childbirth has sharply limited her choices. That sense of agency is an interpretation of the scene, rather than a separate motive Laena explains at length.
What did the showrunner say about her death?
Ryan Condal said the adaptation’s choice suited Laena as a dragon rider: “She’s a dragon rider, she wants to die a dragon rider’s death.” Sky quotes this explanation in its episode guide.

In a Variety interview, Condal called Laena “a valkyrie” and said the production wanted a memorable, active exit that felt true to her character. He also noted that the season had limited time to develop her. These are the showrunner’s reasons for the adaptation; they do not establish every detail of Laena’s private thinking.
How is the book version different?
Condal describes Laena’s death in Fire & Blood as resulting from childbirth complications. The television series instead shows her make the direct choice to have Vhagar burn her. The versions should not be treated as the same sequence: the show gives Laena an explicit final command that is not part of the book account as Condal describes it.
