The kiss between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Mysaria in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6, grew out of a comforting moment Emma D’Arcy helped shape—not a planned kiss that D’Arcy alone wrote or initiated. Sonoya Mizuno said the kiss itself was not planned until the day of filming.
Which scene was Emma D’Arcy’s idea?
It is the Rhaenyra–Mysaria moment in “Smallfolk,” the sixth episode of season 2. In an interview with Variety republished by Yahoo, Emma D’Arcy and Sonoya Mizuno discussed the scene as a development for the television adaptation, not an event taken from George R. R. Martin’s text. Read the Variety interview republished by Yahoo Sports.
The headline’s wording needs a distinction: D’Arcy reportedly contributed the idea for Rhaenyra to hold and comfort Mysaria. Mizuno’s account says the actors did not plan that beat as a kiss until the day they filmed it. The emotional action and the kiss were therefore not the same preplanned idea. Mizuno’s account in TV Insider/Swooon.
Was the kiss scripted?
Reports described the kiss as unscripted, but that does not mean the entire scene was improvised or that D’Arcy was its sole author. Mizuno said the starting point was Rhaenyra wanting to embrace and comfort Mysaria; the kiss emerged in the filming process. Entertainment Tonight also identified the episode and reported on the kiss as unscripted. Entertainment Tonight’s report.

Put precisely: D’Arcy helped shape the intimate, comforting action, and the kiss was not planned as a kiss until filming day, according to Mizuno. The available accounts support actor contribution and collaboration, not the claim that D’Arcy alone authored a scripted kiss.
Is the kiss in Fire & Blood?
No. The Rhaenyra–Mysaria kiss is a television adaptation addition, not a scene in Fire & Blood. PinkNews likewise notes that the book does not explicitly label Rhaenyra lesbian, bisexual, or queer. That distinction matters: the show’s scene is not evidence that the book contains the same romantic moment or assigns her a particular identity. PinkNews on the adaptation and Rhaenyra’s identity.

The kiss alone does not settle Rhaenyra’s sexual identity. It depicts an intimate moment between her and Mysaria, but a single scene is not enough to establish a definitive label for the character. The book does not explicitly give her one, and the television moment is an adaptation choice rather than a direct passage from Martin’s novel.
