The theme music remains the same. Showrunner Ryan Condal said the new design shifts the focus from Targaryen ancestry to the history being made by the Dance of the Dragons.
What changed in the season 2 intro?
Season 1 used blood flowing through a network of stone and metal to trace Targaryen family lines. Season 2 instead shows a tapestry taking shape as red thread is stitched into it, with names appearing as part of the design. The shift is visual, not musical: Ramin Djawadi’s theme continues in the new sequence.
| Element | Season 1 | Season 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Central image | Blood running through stone and metal | Red thread stitched into a tapestry |
| Story function | A visual family tree tracing Targaryen ancestry | A depiction of events becoming part of history |
| Music | Ramin Djawadi’s theme | The same theme music |
Why did the showrunner change it?
Condal explained that the first season’s family-tree concept had served its purpose: “The family is kind of set at [this] point,” he told Gizmodo’s io9. With the story moving into open war, he wanted the credits to reflect events with consequences beyond the immediate moment. He described season 2’s focus as “this living history,” a period that would be seismic both for the characters living through it and for generations to come.
In a separate interview with TVLine, Condal said the goal was to depict that history visually and give fans new details to examine. The tapestry makes the conflict feel like a record being created as the story unfolds, rather than a chart of who is related to whom.

What does the tapestry show?
According to io9’s June 7, 2024 report, the imagery begins in Old Valyria and progresses toward Vhagar killing Arrax over Storm’s End, an event shown in the season 1 finale. The sequence was designed by title company yU+co. Condal said he expected the tapestry to evolve as the series continued, and TVLine’s June 17 report likewise described the design as a way to introduce details and potentially add moments as season 2 aired.
That evolving format is the key contrast: the first sequence presented lineage as an established structure, while the second could depict new events as threads in a larger historical account. The reports describe the season 2 design and its intended flexibility; they do not establish what changes, if any, were made to the sequence after the season aired.
