House of the Dragon’s second-season episode “The Red Dragon and the Gold” turns the Dance of the Dragons into open warfare. Rhaenyra’s attempt to make peace with Alicent fails, and the clash at Rook’s Rest leaves Rhaenys and Meleys dead while Aegon is found alive but gravely incapacitated.
Rhaenyra’s last attempt at peace fails
The episode moves between Daemon’s uncertain efforts to win support at Harrenhal and political maneuvering among the factions in King’s Landing and Dragonstone. At the center is Rhaenyra’s attempt to meet Alicent and avert further bloodshed. The meeting does not produce peace: Rhaenyra comes away believing there is no other path to securing her claim. As Cheryl Eddy’s io9 recap transcribes her line, “Either I win my claim, or I die.” (io9 recap)
The failed meeting gives the episode’s battlefield turn a political consequence. Rhaenyra’s caution has not prevented the conflict from escalating. The recap also quotes her warning that “there are those who have mistaken my caution for weakness. Let that be their undoing.”
Why Criston Cole targets Rook’s Rest
Criston Cole’s force moves against Rook’s Rest, a strategically valuable location because it is close to Dragonstone. The attack draws the conflict out of political maneuvering and into a direct contest between dragonriders. The Greens’ internal divisions are visible too: Aegon and Aemond make competing decisions as events unfold.

Who wins the Battle of Rook’s Rest?
The battle is a costly military turning point rather than a clean victory. Rhaenys rides Meleys into the fight; Aegon arrives on Sunfyre; and Aemond enters on Vhagar. The io9 recap describes Rhaenys and Meleys as dying in the confrontation. The dragon and rider losses make the battle a personal as well as military blow, while the episode leaves the state of another major combatant unresolved.
Is Aegon alive at the end of the episode?
Yes. Cole finds Aegon alive beside the injured Sunfyre, but gravely incapacitated. The episode does not establish his longer-term fate. Its closing uncertainty also concerns Aemond: Cole arrives before viewers learn what Aemond was about to do. (io9 recap)

Where this episode fits in the series
Max identifies George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood as the source material for House of the Dragon and describes the series as set 200 years before Game of Thrones. That context connects the episode’s dynastic conflict to the larger history of Westeros, but Fire & Blood is a source book, not an episode-by-episode transcript. (Max press release, June 13, 2024)
Season two originally premiered June 17, 2024, with weekly episodes scheduled through August 5, according to a Max announcement dated June 14, 2024. Those dates describe the original broadcast schedule, not current streaming availability. (Max press release, June 14, 2024)
