Natalie Portman began preparing for Black Swan about a year before filming, building her ballet training gradually. She described daily ballet work, toe exercises, swimming and toning, with choreography added later. She also spoke about painful foot problems and a dislocated rib. These were her accounts of preparing for Nina Sayers—not a claim that a short course made her a professional ballerina.
How Portman built up her training
Portman told SeattlePI that she began working with ballet teacher Mary Helen Bowers a year before filming. Her account describes a ramp-up, not one fixed schedule: she said she trained for two hours a day for six months, focusing on strengthening and readiness, and then spent about five hours a day training, including swimming and three hours of ballet class. Choreography came later. She joked of pointe shoes, “Pointe shoes are torture devices.” SeattlePI interview

In a separate interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, Portman described starting with basic preparation a year ahead. She said she did 15 minutes of toe exercises daily to prepare for pointe work. As the workload increased, she added ballet hours, swam a mile a day and did toning work. She also watched documentaries by Frederick Wiseman about American Ballet Theatre and Paris Opera Ballet, and read dancers’ autobiographies. Portman said, “I started training a year ahead of time with a great teacher, Mary Helen Bowers, who was in the New York City Ballet for 10 years.” The Fresh Air archive notes that its audio is authoritative and that transcripts may be revised. A 2011 Vogue profile described the final stretch as reaching eight hours a day during the last two months, including choreography and cross-training. That figure refers to a later phase and a different account; it should not be added to the earlier interview figures as though Portman followed one identical daily schedule throughout preparation. What the training did to her body
Portman told Gross that her worst injury was a dislocated rib. She said she avoided deep breaths for six weeks afterward, and that people changed how they lifted her, supporting her under the armpits rather than at the ribcage. She also recalled blisters, calluses and toenails falling off during training. NPR Fresh Air interview
Reports about weight loss before production do not establish a precise calorie intake or a reliable medical account of Portman’s regimen. The Los Angeles Times reported that Portman and Mila Kunis lost weight and described director Darren Aronofsky’s concern that Portman was becoming too thin; the article also records differing recollections about comments on how thin she should become. Portman made a clear distinction between herself and the character’s destructive behavior. In Vogue, she said, “I’d never get to the point where I would starve or injure myself like Nina does.” Nina’s self-starvation and self-injury are part of the fiction, not a training method Portman endorsed or described as her own.
How much of the dancing was Portman’s?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Portman had a dance double, used primarily for wide shots. The paper attributed to Aronofsky the estimate that Portman performed 90% of Nina’s dance sequences. That is the director’s estimate, not an independently verified measurement. The same report quoted choreographer Benjamin Millepied recalling that Portman initially lacked strong ballet basics despite having taken dance classes as a child. Los Angeles Times production report

What her preparation does—and does not—show
Portman’s accounts describe an intensive, escalating preparation tailored to a film role, with physical discomfort and injury along the way. They do not establish a standard training plan, a safe or repeatable routine, or professional ballet qualification. Her reported hours and activities are personal interview accounts from different stages, so they are best understood in that context rather than combined into a single prescription.
