That was her explanation for the rumors—not proof of anyone’s identity, and not an independently verified account of how every rumor began.
What Kendall Jenner said sparked the rumors
In Vogue’s April 2018 profile, published March 14, Jenner was asked why people online seemed to think she was gay. She connected the speculation to the contrast between her private dating life and her sisters’ more public relationships:
“I think it’s because I’m not like all my other sisters, who are like, ‘Here’s me and my boyfriend!’ So it was a thing for a minute because no one ever saw me with a guy. I would always go that extra mile to be low-key with guys, sneaking around all the time. You don’t want to, like, look crazy.”
Her point was that people had not seen her with a man because she deliberately kept dating out of public view. That describes what she said about her public presentation at the time; it does not establish her sexual orientation or prove a single origin for all the speculation.

What she said about her identity in 2018
In the same interview, Jenner said she was not gay, while also saying she was not against experience and had not been with women. She said, “I have literally nothing to hide,” and added, “I would never hide something like that.” These are her comments in that 2018 interview, not a basis for assigning her a permanent label or drawing conclusions about her private life.
Although this article’s subject is often phrased as “bisexual rumors,” contemporaneous coverage more commonly described the speculation as rumors that Jenner was gay or lesbian. ABC News’ March 15, 2018 report and ELLE’s March 14, 2018 coverage recapped her response. The labels used in headlines and speculation should not be mistaken for a statement of identity beyond what Jenner herself said.

Jenner’s explanation was about privacy and public visibility, not evidence that can confirm or disprove an orientation. Clothing, gender expression, friendships, and whether someone appears publicly with a partner cannot establish who they are attracted to.
In a contemporaneous opinion piece, Monica Castillo of The Washington Post argued that sexuality is private and that media speculation can pressure people to discuss it before they choose to. That is commentary on the coverage, rather than independent reporting on how the rumors started.
