Alien: Romulus fits between Alien and Aliens, carrying forward their continuity and imagery while giving the franchise a new viewpoint: young workers on a colony, led by Rain and her synthetic companion Andy. It does not rewrite the earlier films. Instead, it uses the gap between them for a standalone survival story that also reaches back to the prequels.
Where Alien: Romulus fits in the timeline
The film takes place after Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) and before James Cameron’s Aliens (1986). TIME places its events in 2122, roughly 20 years after Alien, and about 37 years before Aliens, set in 2179. The Los Angeles Times describes the story as occupying the stretch between the two films.
Rain is a laborer on a remote mining colony who hopes to leave with Andy, the synthetic she regards as a sibling. They and a group of other young people board an abandoned station in search of a safer place to live. The resulting story centers on their attempt to survive, rather than retelling either earlier film. (Los Angeles Times; TIME)
How the film preserves continuity
It follows consequences of the original Alien
Romulus reconnects with the first film through Big Chap, the creature ejected from the Narcissus at the end of Alien. TIME reports that the creature survived and was recovered for Weyland-Yutani research. That link gives the new station and its dangers a direct connection to the earlier story rather than treating the franchise’s central creature as a fresh discovery.

It carries prequel lore forward
The station also connects the story to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant through research involving the black substance associated with those films. This extends the franchise’s existing questions about experimentation and the origins or manipulation of life. It is a bridge across different chapters of the series, not evidence that Romulus replaces their events. (TIME)
What changes: the people at the center
The most apparent shift is the viewpoint. Instead of following a commercial crew or a military unit, Romulus focuses on young people raised in the hard conditions of a mining colony. Director Fede Álvarez has said he imagined the children of the colony in Aliens grown into young adults with limited prospects. Their desire to escape makes corporate exploitation part of the story’s starting point, not just background world-building.

Rain and Andy’s bond gives that setting an intimate center. The franchise has repeatedly used synthetic characters to explore trust, personhood and corporate interests; here, those questions run through a close, sibling-like relationship. Álvarez has described Andy as central to the film’s emotional and thematic focus. (EL PAÍS; Associated Press)
How it blends Alien horror with Aliens action
Álvarez has described the film as shaped by the interplay between the first two movies: Alien’s terror and discovery, and Aliens’ move toward action and thriller storytelling. He called Romulus “the rebellious child of the two.” That is a useful description of its approach: it draws on both traditions instead of simply reproducing one film’s tone. The director also described its core as a horror thriller. (EL PAÍS; Associated Press)

Standalone story, extensive franchise callbacks
Álvarez has said viewers can follow Romulus as a standalone story, even as longtime fans spot references to the wider series. He described it as a story “filled with references to every movie” and as a “love letter” to the other films. Those are the director’s stated intentions, not a guarantee that every callback will work equally well for every viewer. For some, familiar lore and imagery make the new story feel connected; for others, the density of references may compete with its originality. (GamesRadar+)
The distinction matters when asking whether the film “disrupts” canon. The available account supports continuity and a new story set in an unfilled interval, not a claim that Romulus invalidates earlier films. Its disruption is better understood as a change of emphasis: a different generation, a more personal human-synthetic relationship, and a story that blends the series’ horror and action modes.

Practical craft and the franchise’s visual texture
The film’s connection to its predecessors is also a matter of production style. The Associated Press reports that Álvarez recruited behind-the-scenes creatives and concept artists associated with the Scott and Cameron films. He said the production used new techniques when helpful while returning to practical methods for effects such as acid blood melting through a set. GamesRadar+ reports that the production used full animatronics and built sets, with CGI applied selectively. Those choices help give the film a tangible visual lineage without requiring every effect to be practical. (Associated Press; GamesRadar+)

What “respects and disrupts” means here
- Respect: The chronology fits between the original films, the story follows consequences of Alien, and the plot incorporates lore from the prequels.
- Change: A young colony-born ensemble and Rain and Andy’s bond shift attention toward constrained lives, loyalty and synthetic personhood.
- Combination: The film draws on both the original’s horror and Aliens’ action-thriller approach.
- Trade-off: References can reward recognition of the series, but their value depends on whether a viewer finds them enriching or distracting.
