Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City was named No. 1 in The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024. The result marked the first time a Mexican bar topped the ranking—but it describes the 2024 list, not the bar’s current position. The 2026 profiles place Handshake at No. 6 globally and No. 12 in North America.
Why was Handshake Speakeasy named the world’s best bar?
The World’s 50 Best Bars announced its 2024 ranking at a ceremony in Madrid on 22 October 2024, naming Handshake Speakeasy the No. 1 bar. It was the first Mexican bar to reach the top position. The award is a ranking outcome for that year, rather than an objective or permanent measure of the world’s best bar. The World’s 50 Best’s announcement records the result.
The win followed a rapid rise through the lists. Handshake placed No. 3 on the global list in 2023; it ranked No. 2 on the North America list in both 2022 and 2023, then No. 1 on that regional list in 2024. Those positions refer to different years and list scopes, so they should not be treated as a single continuous ranking.
For a sense of how the 2024 result was determined, Travel + Leisure reported that the list drew anonymous votes from an Academy of 700 experts—including mixologists, bar owners and drinks writers—who considered the best and most consistent overall experiences they had encountered in the preceding 18 months. That is the outlet’s description of the ranking process. Travel + Leisure’s 2024 report also quoted co-founder Rodrigo Urraca: “Winning is a dream come true. Nothing is impossible, if you focus and really work at it.”

What is Handshake Speakeasy’s current ranking?
The World’s 50 Best’s 2026 profiles list Handshake at No. 6 globally and No. 12 in North America. These are separate rankings, not competing figures: one is worldwide and the other covers North America. The change illustrates why the 2024 “world’s best” label should always retain its year. See the global profile and the North America profile.
What is the bar like?
The 2026 global profile describes two connected experiences: an original, Prohibition- and Great Gatsby-inspired room for 32 guests, and a hidden basement bar with a more energetic atmosphere. It says guests with reservations in the first space spend 45 minutes there before being guided downstairs. The North America profile instead describes the main bar as serving 32 guests in 90-minute sittings. Because those descriptions give different durations, neither should be relied on as a current booking term; check directly with Handshake before planning around a particular length of visit.

What should you order at Handshake Speakeasy?
The bar’s reported approach is culinary as much as cocktail-focused: its program draws on Mexican ingredients and techniques, with preparation that can take time. A 2024 feature by The World’s 50 Best says some drinks take up to 48 hours to craft and describes an on-site laboratory where the team experiments. The figure refers to the preparation described in that feature, not a claim that every drink takes that long.
Examples from the reported menu
- Butter Mushroom Old Fashioned: the 2024 feature describes bourbon with brown butter, mushroom and maple, finished with enoki mushroom.
- Mexi-Thai: the same feature describes tequila with kaffir lime, coconut basil oil and tomato.
- Once Upon a Time in Oaxaca: the 2026 North America profile identifies this as a mezcal-based cocktail.
- Banana Manhattan: another drink named in the 2026 profile.
The 2026 North America profile also notes agave spirits such as sotol, tequila and mezcal from local producers, and says the lab is used to clarify juices, make syrups and infuse cordials. These are examples reported by The World’s 50 Best, not a guarantee that a particular drink or ingredient is on the menu when you visit. Check the current menu with the venue.
